"Many scholars from the New
London Group... advocate against the
dichotomy of visual literacy versus
linguistic literacy.
Instead, they stress the necessity of
accepting the
co-presence of linguistic literacies
and visual literacies
as interacting and interlacing
modalities which
complement one another
in the meaning making process."

...don’t exist!
( at least, not as we commonly understand them)
6. “...rather than concern ourselves with the
preferred learning style of an audience member
we should think about the modality that best
suits the content.
For instance most people are likely to prefer to
see an organizational chart, rather than have it
described to them.
Some types of content are likely to be
better transferred to audience members
by being presented in multiple modalities.”

9. Name that flower!
“It is a herbaceous plant with short creeping
rhizomes and small rounded or spoon-shaped
evergreen leaves 2–5 cm long, grows close to
ground. The flowerheads are 2–3 cm in diameter,
with white ray florets (often tipped red) and yellow
disc florets; they are produced on leafless stems 2–
10 cm (rarely 15 cm) tall.” -Wikipedia
11. The Shoot - adapted from Creating a Web Photo Comic for Morons
http://chaoticcomics.comicgenesis.com/webcomicinstructions.htm
Take everything you need with you to the shoot. Inform your actors, if any, of the time and place and what
to wear. If possible, bring them with you. Once there, take a look at your script and compare your mental
notes with that of the location. Is it really suitable? How is the lighting in the area? Let's say you're shooting
a romantic scene by a bench in the city park. You might want to keep the following questions in mind.
What time of day works best for your scene? If at night, are you close to the lamp, or will you need
additional lighting?
How many shots will you be taking? Remember that sunlight changes thru the day, so the angle and
intensity will vary.
Do you have the proper filters with you? What image adjustments should you plan on during post-
production (like blurring, red-eye, etc)?
Dramatic backgrounds, like a fountain or a light, are they there? Are they needed?
What are your angles to shoot from? Can you get to them? Not every shot will be a head shot, so you need
to be able to be flexible and understand the dynamics of the area.

15. Hey,
I’m Joseph S. I'm 17 years old.
This 365 I've been doing for the past year has helped me so much. It has kept
me grounded when I was down, or off the walls.
Whenever I need something to cheer me up, I'll probably just look at a
random day of the year, and remember that day and reminisce. I realize that
these are the best years that anyone could have in their life.

THE NYC SHOOT-OUT FOR FREEDOM UNION
SQUARE
The soul of NYC has always been illuminated by its
street photography and by its artists. Don't stand idly by
and watch "The Dying of the Light".
New York City has proposed new rules that would require
permits and insurance for a wide range of casual and
amateur photography and filmmaking. These rules will
have a smothering effect on independent filmmakers,
photographers, artists, and activists as well as students,
hobbyists, and tourists.
The new proposed rules:
Under new rules proposed by the Mayor's Office of Film,
Theatre and Broadcast, any group of two or more people
using a handheld camera (still or video) for more than 30
minutes at a single location (defined as a 100-foot area)
would have to apply for and obtain a permit and would
have to present proof of $1 million in insurance (unless a
waiver was obtained). Also under the new rules, any
group of five or more people using a single tripod for
more than 10 minutes would have to obtain a permit and
have insurance.
