Originally presented at Swansea Con 2016 http://swanseacon.co.uk If someone had said to you a few years back that they could build an app, 'push' to the cloud and even scale it in a matter of minutes with a few simple commands, you'd have most likely responded; 'You've got your head in the clouds'. Times do change. This talk explains this phenomenon called Platform as a Service and how it can benefit you while demonstrating a real live deployment of an application with a blue green deployment and scale-up operation thrown in for fun. The session will outline, What is PaaS? What options do I have? How do I develop locally? Dynamic Scaling of applications based on load How do I build my application to be fault tolerant so I can dynamically scale?

As organizations continue to move to the cloud for hosting applications and development, security teams must protect multiple attack surfaces, including the applications and cloud infrastructure. Additionally, attackers are automated and capable. While these attackers continuously probe and find access or vulnerabilities on many different levels, their success usually results from human error in code or infrastructure configurations, such as open admin ports and over privileged identity roles. Join DisruptOps and NetSPI for this webinar to learn how to better secure both the application layer and cloud infrastructure, using both automated tools and capable penetration testers to uncover logic flaws and other soft spots. We will share how to find and remediate your own vulnerabilities more efficiently, before the attackers do.

Numerous technologies exist for profiling and tracing live Linux systems - from the traditional and straight forward gProf and strace to the more elaborate SystemTap, oProfile and the Linux Trace Toolkit. Very recently some new technologies, perf events and ftrace, have appeared that can already largely take the place of these traditional tools and have gained mainline acceptance in the Linux community - meaning that they will become more and more relevant in the future and are already being used to shed light on real world performance issues. This presentation provides an overview of a number of the more noteworthy instrumentation tools available for Linux and the technologies that they build upon. Some examples of using perf events to analyse a running system to help track down real world performance problems are demonstrated.

Talk about bcc/eBPF for SCALE15x (2017) by Brendan Gregg. "BPF (Berkeley Packet Filter) has been enhanced in the Linux 4.x series and now powers a large collection of performance analysis and observability tools ready for you to use, included in the bcc (BPF Complier Collection) open source project. BPF nowadays can do system tracing, software defined networks, and kernel fast path: much more than just filtering packets! This talk will focus on the bcc/BPF tools for performance analysis, which make use of other built in Linux capabilities: dynamic tracing (kprobes and uprobes) and static tracing (tracepoints and USDT). There are now bcc tools for measuring latency distributions for file system I/O and run queue latency, printing details of storage device I/O and TCP retransmits, investigating blocked stack traces and memory leaks, and a whole lot more. These lead to performance wins large and small, especially when instrumenting areas that previously had zero visibility. Tracing superpowers have finally arrived, built in to Linux."

Very few trends in IT have generated as much buzz as cloud computing. This session will cut through the hype and quickly clarify the ontology for cloud computing. The bulk of the conversation will focus on the open source software that can be used to build compute clouds (infrastructure-as-a-service) and the complimentary open source management tools that can be combined to automate the management of cloud computing environments. The session will appeal to anyone who has a good grasp of traditional data center infrastructure but is struggling with the benefits and migration path to a cloud computing environment. Systems administrators and IT generalists will leave the discussion with a general overview of the options at their disposal to effectively build and manage their own cloud computing environments using free and open source software.

Event-driven architectures are distributed, asynchronous, and scalable. The rise of real-time decision making, the on-demand economy, explosion of data, and the adoption of microservices have all driven the adoption of event driven architectures. Event-driven code is reactive by nature and significantly different from imperative programming. In this breakout session, we'll examine building an event-driven application and tackle the most common stumbling blocks of EDA, including: • How and where for maintaining state. • How to handle transactions that span multiple services. • REST or Kafka (or something else). • Asynchronous testing. Learn how AutoScout24, the largest online car marketplace Europe-wide, are building their Autobahn in the cloud. The secret ingredient? Culture! Because “microservices and cloud” is only one half of the digital transformation story: The other half is how your organization deals with cultural change as you transition from the old world of IT into building microservices on AWS with agile DevOps teams in a true “you build it, you run it” fashion. Listen to stories from the trenches and learn how to become cloud-native, evolve your architecture step by step, drive cultural change across your teams, and manage your company’s transformation for the future.

Calico provides secure network connectivity for containers and virtual machine workloads. Calico creates and manages a flat layer 3 network, assigning each workload a fully routable IP address. Workloads can communicate without IP encapsulation or network address translation for bare metal performance, easier troubleshooting, and better interoperability. In environments that require an overlay, Calico uses IP-in-IP tunneling or can work with other overlay networking such as flannel. Calico also provides dynamic enforcement of network security rules. Using Calico’s simple policy language, you can achieve fine-grained control over communications between containers, virtual machine workloads, and bare metal host endpoints. Proven in production at scale, Calico features integrations with Kubernetes, OpenShift, Docker, Mesos, DC/OS, and OpenStack.

Leadership isn’t something that you achieve with a manager role. It’s something that you *are*. Leaders exist everywhere in an organization. Leaders lead up, sideways, and down in a hierarchy. How do they do that? Why do they do that? How do they maintain their technical acumen if they relinquish their hands-on roles? You may choose to use your leadership skills to lead a project, lead an organization or simply to rally your coworkers. Or, you may just build better communication with your manager. You will leave this talk with a better understanding of what your leadership tendencies are, and how you might grow as a leader, regardless of whether or not you want to become a manager.

Netflix moves fast and Engineering Tools is charged with enabling that velocity. With that goal in mind, we made a lot of tooling changes in the past year. But with change, comes cost. We are in the process of migrating several systems near and dear to our developers, including our version control system, deployment tool, and operating system for our AMIs. Our goal is to do this while minimizing impact on our customer teams, How did we do? What could we have done better? What aspects of Netflix's culture enabled this? And, most importantly, what can you take back to your own companies regarding the importance of making improvements while mitigating the tax on your teams?
Introducing Change while Preserving Engineering Velocity
Introducing Change while Preserving Engineering Velocity
Dianne Marsh
At Netflix, we realize that there’s a tension between the availability of our service and our speed of innovation. If we move slowly, we can be very available -- but that’s not a good business proposition. If we move super fast, we risk downtime -- and that might annoy our customers. But what if we could increase our velocity without significantly impacting availability? How can we shift that curve so that we’re moving faster without dropping any of those coveted 9’s? How can we engineer velocity by weaving together tooling and culture with software development to expose and elevate highly effective practices? This talk describes various components of Netflix’s continuous delivery platform -- much of which is available in open source. I’ll show how these pieces fit together and allow us to build scaffolding so that we’re comfortable with software developers making the decision to push the button for prod deployment -- and helps them to recover if necessary. As a result, we can run fast, trusting our tooling and our culture. I’ll also describe how we test our resiliency through simulating failure, unleashing the monkeys (Simian Army) on our production environment. Because if you’re afraid of cute little monkeys, imagine how afraid you’ll be of a production environment that offers those same risks but doesn’t give you an opportunity to test your response to those dangers. Throughout this talk, I hope that you will challenge yourself to consider how your company can "shift the curve" through tooling and to achieve a high velocity environment without negatively impacting reliability.

At Netflix, we continue to improve upon our continuous delivery process. We thrive in a hybrid environment, where every developer is able to deploy code, and with that freedom comes the responsibility for ensuring that our customers are not negatively impacted. We have constructed Open Source tools toward a Continuous Delivery solution. In this presentation, from QConSF 2013, you will learn about our tool chain so that you can determine which make sense in your environment.

n this introduction to Scala, I will demonstrate why I love Scala and why I think that you will too. You’ll learn why you don’t need to go from 0 to functions and how you can ease yourself into this language. I’ll show you some Scala, compare it to Java, and give you pointers on how to start your journey into this functional object-oriented language.

Is your organization committed to the power of the Java platform but stuck in the Java language? Do you spend your time wishing you could use Scala at work, but don’t see how you can get it approved? There are good reasons to push for it! Scala is a popular language with Java developers because of its expressiveness and lack of boilerplate code. It allows you to focus on the problem rather than the ceremony required by Java. Yet, businesses are often reluctant to move to Scala, citing concerns about availability of developers and risks of working in a new language. Learn strategies for bringing Scala into your organization, including using it in non-production code, integrating Scala into a Java application, and easing your fellow programmers into functional programming. See how to use Scala for new development while maintaining your investment in existing Java code. Hear stories of how other organizations have done this and succeeded. You’ll leave knowing how you can move to Scala without risking your job or the success of your projects.

ADR, or Architecture Decision Record, is a valuable tool in software development for several reasons. It provides a centralized location for documenting and tracking architectural decisions, aiding both current and future team members. ADRs enhance communication among team members by documenting the rationale behind architectural decisions, especially beneficial during onboarding of new team members or when revisiting decisions. They serve as a knowledge base, enabling teams to learn from past decisions and refine their decision-making process. Additionally, ADRs contribute to transparency by helping stakeholders understand the reasons behind specific architectural choices. As with any other tool or process, introducing them into an organization can face several obstacles, and overcoming these challenges is crucial for successful implementation. In this talk I go through some common problems and our way of solving them.

Data spaces in distributed environments should be allowed to evolve in agile ways providing data space owners with large flexibility about which data they store. Agility and heterogeneity, however, jeopardize data exchanges because representations may build on varying ontologies and data consumers may not rely on the semantic correctness of their queries in the context of semantically heterogeneous, evolving data spaces. Graph data spaces are one example of a powerful model for representing and querying data whose semantics may change over time. To assert and enforce conditions on individual graph data spaces, shape languages (e.g SHACL) have been developed. We investigate the question of how querying and programming can be guarded by reasoning over SHACL constraints in a distributed setting and we sketch a picture of how a future landscape based on semantically heterogeneous data spaces might look like.
