Abstract: This talk will describe the use of http://www.citeulike.org to manage and share bibliographic references among 1300 scientists and engineers working at the Sanger Institute (http://www.sanger.ac.uk) and European Bioinformatics Insitute (http://www.ebi.ac.uk) based on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Cambridge, UK. Using data from references shared so far, we will illustrate the costs, benefits and adoption of citeulike to create and share bibliographic data on the web. Linked Data Love: research representation, discovery, and assessment #ALAAC15 The explosion of linked data platforms and data stores over the last five years has been profound – both in terms of quantity of data as well as its potential impact. Research information systems such as VIVO (www.vivoweb.org) play a significant role in enabling this work. VIVO is an open source, Semantic Web-based application that provides an integrated, searchable view of the scholarly activities of an organization. The uniform semantic structure of VIVO-ISF data enables a new class of tools to advance science. This presentation will provide a brief introduction and update to VIVO and present ways that this semantically-rich data can enable visualizations, reporting and assessment, next-generation collaboration and team building, and enhanced multi-site search. Libraries are uniquely positioned to facilitate the open representation of research information and its subsequent use to spur collaboration, discovery, and assessment. The talk will conclude with a description of ways librarians are engaged in this work – including visioning, metadata and ontology creation, policy creation, data curation and management, technical, and engagement activities. Public libraries have a social mission which involves in providing collections and services to meet a community’s information needs. They exist to serve communities. It is the local gate way to knowledge and provides a basic condition for life long learning, independent decision making and cultural development of the individual and social groups. But tremendous changes in the Information and Communication Technology and changing life style has greatly influenced the information seeking behavior of the library users. Library services based on the conventional service model lack the new information services and there exist a large gap between user needs and actual library service. The public library services should be re-engineered to meet the changing atmosphere. Library leaders must have the skills to create and nurture a new type of library culture in which change is encouraged and new visions of service implemented. A new focus on the needs of non traditional library users has also become necessary to attract the community.

There is significant value in using Social Media and Mobile Apps in social, political and economic spheres of activity. Within these areas, social media tools such as Blogs, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook share a common usage in supporting internal communication, collaboration, news aggregation, teaching, learning and knowledge sharing. Are there similar benefits for using social media within the spheres of Leadership and Management in Libraries? How are 21st century Library leaders utilising social media to enhance services in their organisations and connect and communicate with stakeholders? What are the opportunities and challenges associated with using social media in Libraries? This presentation seeks to address these issues. It highlights some of the core competencies (professional and personal) that is required for library leaders to function effectively in a technologically driven environment and introduces emerging trends and concepts - cloud storage, crowdfunding, makerspaces, MOOCs, news aggregation, photo and video sharing, self-publishing, social networking, video conferencing, visualization - that can be readily adopted and adapted (‘mashed up’) in libraries and other knowledge repositories. The goal is to develop and share a toolkit of resources for 21st century library leaders who are willing to use Social Media and Mobile Apps to engage their communities, reshape and add value to the effective delivery of innovative library services.

It contains a strong plea for a focus shift for librarians, but in fact also for companies and organisations. A focus into the environments where the users are, instead of expecting them to come to us, or our resources. Exploration of all relevant user environments for your organization, the use of new web-based technologies with Web 2.0 elements and certainly a more structural technical re-design of (library) information systems is required to deliver your services and resources at the place of need. A simple short-term solution like a QuickSearch Library Toolbar is explained, several other tools to “enrich” the user’s personal search environment, as well as the more long-term ongoing work at the Libraries of the University of Groningen and the Central Medical Library of the University Medical Center Groningen.

OBJECTIVES: Translational research focuses on the bench-to-bedside information transfer process — getting the information from researchers into the hands of clinical decision makers. At the same time, researchers who manage international research collaborations could benefit from increased knowledge and awareness of online collaboration tools to support these projects. Our goal was to support both needs through building awareness and skills with online and social media. METHODS: The Library developed a curricula targeted specifically to academic researchers focusing on collaboration technologies and online tools to support the research process. The curricula will provide instruction at three levels: gateway, bridge, and mastery tools. The goal of Level One is to persuade researchers of the utility of online social tools. To develop the program, input was solicited from researchers identified as leaders in this area as well as focus groups of students to discover which tools are already being used. RESULTS: Training is being provided on those tools identified as most likely to engage researchers (Google Docs, Skype, online scheduling, Adobe Connect, citation sharing tools). The curricula is being delivered as workshops duplicated as podcasts and in other online media. CONCLUSIONS: Online and social media are practical tools for supporting distance collaborations relatively inexpensively while offering the added benefit of placing selected information in online spaces that facilitate discovery and discussion with clinical care providers, thus supporting the fundamental research processes at the same time as promoting bench-to-bedside information transfer.

Workshop “Hoe kom ik nu aan de full-text?” Dankzij het hybride werken is lang niet iedereen elke dag meer te vinden “on campus”, maar ook voor mensen thuis moet de toegang tot wetenschappelijke informatie en bibliotheekdiensten goed geregeld zijn. De bibliotheek heeft hierin een taak om bronnen zo bereikbaar mogelijk te houden, waar onze gebruikers ook werken. Daarnaast is de opkomst van open access publiceren de laatste jaren ook in een stroomversnelling geraakt. Dat een groot deel van het wetenschappelijk werk nu open access beschikbaar is, is natuurlijk erg mooi, maar de open access-artikelen zijn her en der verspreid over het web. Wat is de meest efficiënte manier om deze publicaties te vinden? Ook niet onbelangrijk is dat toegang tot tijdschriften erg prijzig is en veel instituten hebben niet de middelen om een licentie op alle bronnen te nemen. Vooral organisaties buiten de academische wereld worstelen met toegang tot onderzoek. Bovendien moeten de organisaties met toegang de vraag stellen, wat zullen we doen als we plotseling de toegang tot een reeks tijdschriften verliezen om het abonnement is geannuleerd? Als de bibliotheek een artikel niet kan leveren, dan weten we dat onze gebruikers andere manieren zullen gebruiken om de pdf te krijgen. Echter, deze andere manieren bespreken we bijna nooit. Hoeveel verschillende manieren zijn er precies? Hoe werken ze? Deelnemers van de workshop leren over alle mogelijke manieren, hulpmiddelen en krijgen tips om de full-tekst te vinden van wetenschappelijke publicaties. We bespreken “best practices” van bibliotheek-tools en diensten (Linkresolvers, Discovery, LeanLibrary, LibX, Apps, etc.) en testen we vooral alle alternatieve tools zoals EndNote Click (voorheen Kopernio), Unpaywall, CORE Discovery, OpenAccess-Button, LibKey Nomad, Google Scholar-Button en andere extensies of bookmarklets. De tools die we willen laten zien zijn maar beperkt beschikbaar op smartphones of tablets. Neem daarom als het kan een laptop mee waarop in Edge, Chrome of FireFox extensies geïnstalleerd mogen worden.

The purpose of this talk is to explain, emphasize and discuss the growing importance of being abled to identify, track, record and analyse all research related data inside ánd outside the academic hospital environment. The goal is to aim for better insight of the data trail, contributing to research integrity, research impact and societal relevance. The medical library plays a crucial role as partner in collaboration with key stakeholders inside the hospital, and within the university research community. Because of it's unique wide and overall perspective, it has the opportunity to see new possibilities and needs to grasp these new tasks and set new relationships with partners that were previously out of scope. Background: The use and development of various research- or healthcare-related datasystems is growing exponentially over the last years. Technical innovations make it possible to much more easily either integrate data systems or create live interacton and data-exchange with sources inside and outside the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The medical library is trying to pro-actively initiate more awareness, discussion, procedures plus guidelines. Summary and activities: From the perspective of the medical library in it's role of managing and facilitating the current research information systems (CRIS, in our case “Pure”), combined with the growing expertise in research analytics and impact, we clearly see the urgency of bringing together healthcare data-systems in the hospital with other research-related systems. This is needed in order to be able to comply to research integrity, legal and ethical requirements, but also to enable better use of the research data for analytical purposes to support various processes in academic career development and research assessment. Identifying relations between research output and healthcare data is one thing, but actually creating and registering these relationships in the research information systems is a task where the library can take a leading role. In the UMCG it is mandatory to register each scientific project in which (new or existing) data and/or biomaterials of human subjects (patients and/or healthy volunteers) are involved. The library has been involved –together with many other stakeholders- in the development of this internal "Research Register" and the UMCG data catalogue, with the main focus to make integration possible with Pure for research output and authors. In order to improve visibility and findability in general, the library advised in creating publishing guidelines for several UMCG affiliations including the Cohort and Biobank Coordination Hub (with 150+ UMCG Cohorts & Biobanks) with focus on making relations and connection possible between the data systems, research output and other research-related items. The library is co-admin for the UMCG for all clinical trials registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. Together with Research Office we are working on research

The Trail of the Data : Why the library should be the central pivot bringing ...

“ Into the User Environment Now!» was the title of my first plenary presentation at an EAHIL conference. It pictured how -back in 2006- how users and the information landscape changed rapidly, and what we needed to do about it as medical libraries, to keep up the pace, to not loose the connection with the user. Technologies to embrace, actions to take… This update pictures where things went right, wrong or very different! And it discusses where we are now in 2022, with a peek into possible futures, from the perspective of a medical library in a Dutch academic hospital, facilitating patient care, education ánd research support. Biography and Bibliography Guus van den Brekel is medical information specialist at the Central Medical Library of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), in north of the Netherlands. His work includes developing, maintaining of library services and tools for staff and students, as well as innovation.
