Responsible internet users of any age should know what to look for and how to stop cyberbullying. In the old days, bullying really only happened in the school yard, and victims would be safe at home. Nowadays, this simply isn’t the case, as bullying has moved onto the internet. Threats, intimidation, insults and gossip on the web have made life miserable for thousands of cyberbullying victims.
The online community is as much a community as the ones we participate in in our offline lives. We have a responsibility to treat others with respect and kindness as we wish to be treated; to do unto others as we wish done unto to ourselves. By establishing ourselves as part of a community, we are obligated to help out our friends and those around us who are in need, just as we would in our regular day to day lives.
In the fall of 2012, teenager Amanda Todd became a high profile victim of cyberbullying and took her own life. The fueled international debate on cyberbullying and the dangers of the internet being used as a weapon.
Optional Slide The Megan Meier case is a high profile story about cyberbullying. In 2006, this high school student was befriended, and eventually tormented, by a boy called Josh Evans on MySpace. She hung herself after Josh told her “the world is better off without you”. It turns out that Josh Evans never existed – and that her tormentor was the middle-aged mother of a neighbour. On April 2, 2009 the H.R.1966 — Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act was introduced. Watch this 5-minute video from November 2007 to find out more about this tragic story.
