Dear Sherwin,

Please share this with your 9 classmates in Sci Ed 216. I can't still be in class since my face
marks are still raw. Lord willing I will be with the class by next saturday (Nov 20th). Meanwhile,
may I leave this assignment to be passed on Nov 20th.

1. Select a barangay where you could do a mini survey.

2. Get a random sampling of the members of the community which will cut across the different
sectors of the populace(meaning farmers, housewives, teachers, church workers,
businessmen, gov't officials, etc) and ask them (maybe two per sector, totaling to a max of 20
people) to name the 3 most common environmental problems(present) in the community by
rank from the most(1) to the least(5) pressing.

     3. Have some follow-up questions on them like - their root causes; their major effect to the
community; the seriousness of the problem; what the government is doing in terms of programs
if there are any; other community problems as a result; their suggested solutions.

    4. Suggested format: Tabular like the one below

I- Survey Site:
        Barangay: Kitubo

        Municipality: Kitaotao, Bukidnon

Description: A barangay located at the southern part of Bukidnon. It
takes more than an hour to travel from its location to
the municipality proper. The reason is there is no
shortcut way to reach the municipality, thereby it is a
need to pass across Quezon and Camp I to get there. The
place is rich in farm products like sugarcane and corn.
There are few who plant peanuts, cassava and rubber.
This barangay is the heart of trade to the surrounding
barangays which are still under the same municipality.

II- The Sample:
There are sixteen (16) samples in the study which cut across the different
sectors of the community. The following are the samples with the corresponding
sectors they represented:

        Name: Sector:

1. Mrs. Nelly Ann G. Batonghinog Education (teacher)

2. Mrs. Nora Ofima Education (teacher)

3. Mr. Regie Gomez Business

9. Mr. Aniano Batonghinog Religious Group
10. Mrs. Norma Benignos Womens’ Group

11. Mrs. Cora Montesa Womens’ Group

12. Mr. Frediswindo Galindo Farmer

13. Mr. Danilo Andamon Farmer

15. Mrs. Teresita Leonis Housewife

16. Ms. Nessel Montejo Youth (SK)

III-Results and Discussion:
From the sixteen samples, the following Environmental Problems were named:
(Arranged according to Frequency)

Problem: Frequency:

1. Water Resources Management 16

2. Global Warming 13

3. Solid Waste Management 10

4. Soil Acidity 7

5. Landslide/ Soil Erosion 6

6. Forest Denudation 4

7. Eutrophication 2

8. Wildlife Extinction 1

All of the samples mentioned water resource management as the most pressing
problem in the community. The lack of supply for portable water is a problem ever since.
There is a limited potential source which according to them is probably due to slash and
burn practice of farmers.

Second most pressing issue is the feeling of hotness due to Global warming. But
most of the respondents do not understand the real score of what we are presently
experiencing with the climate. They associate the lack of trees as the primary reason of
the problem. Only very few, definitely from the education and Gov’t working sectors gat
the right understanding.

Solid waste management is among the most experienced perennial problem. Ten
out of sixteen respondents said that this is due to the nature of our being Filipinos, the
lack of discipline and also the lack of regard of the Barangay Officials to put garbage
facilities in some strategic places for the proper disposal of bypassers.

Most of the farmers and housewives understand their being unproductive in
farming which they tell that their soil is becoming more acidic as time progresses. They
have no choice but to use commercial fertilizers to improve their yield. Organic farming
is in their knowledge but due to time and ease in application, they seem to ignore.

The least pressing problems given are eutrophication, of which only from the
education sector have identified. They believe this as caused by residents who wash
clothes in the river; wildlife extinction which according to the church leader needs a
consideration for it is a gift of our Creator and an order to preserve nature.

IV- Conclusion:
Results showed that there is generally lack of educational awareness of the
population of Barangay Kitubo, Kitaotao, Bukidnon in terms of our Climatic condition
and alternative farming technology. There is an evidence of social disregard and lack of
discipline in maintaining cleanliness through solid waste management and lastly, lack of
national consciousness due to self-interests in the preservation and conservation of
natural resources.

  • 1. Dear Sherwin, Please share this with your 9 classmates in Sci Ed 216. I can't still be in class since my face marks are still raw. Lord willing I will be with the class by next saturday (Nov 20th). Meanwhile, may I leave this assignment to be passed on Nov 20th. 1. Select a barangay where you could do a mini survey. 2. Get a random sampling of the members of the community which will cut across the different sectors of the populace(meaning farmers, housewives, teachers, church workers, businessmen, gov't officials, etc) and ask them (maybe two per sector, totaling to a max of 20 people) to name the 3 most common environmental problems(present) in the community by rank from the most(1) to the least(5) pressing. 3. Have some follow-up questions on them like - their root causes; their major effect to the community; the seriousness of the problem; what the government is doing in terms of programs if there are any; other community problems as a result; their suggested solutions. 4. Suggested format: Tabular like the one below ______________________________________________________________________________ _____________ Environmental Rank Root Causes Major effect to Seriousness Government Related Suggested Problem community 0f problem intervention Problem Solution ______________________________________________________________________________ ___ Thanks Sherwin. God bless. Dr. LMA Navaja

  • 3. I- Survey Site: Barangay: Kitubo Municipality: Kitaotao, Bukidnon Description: A barangay located at the southern part of Bukidnon. It takes more than an hour to travel from its location to the municipality proper. The reason is there is no shortcut way to reach the municipality, thereby it is a need to pass across Quezon and Camp I to get there. The place is rich in farm products like sugarcane and corn. There are few who plant peanuts, cassava and rubber. This barangay is the heart of trade to the surrounding barangays which are still under the same municipality. II- The Sample: There are sixteen (16) samples in the study which cut across the different sectors of the community. The following are the samples with the corresponding sectors they represented: Name: Sector: 1. Mrs. Nelly Ann G. Batonghinog Education (teacher) 2. Mrs. Nora Ofima Education (teacher) 3. Mr. Regie Gomez Business 4. Mr. Nito Urboda Business 5. Mr. Victor A. Agot Gov’t Office (kagawad) 6. Mrs. Aldemer Gov’t Office (secretary) 7. Mrs. Leodila Ofima Nat’l Office (Health) 8. Fr. Mrs. Teresita Leonis Housewife 16. Ms. Nessel Montejo Youth (SK) III-Results and Discussion: From the sixteen samples, the following Environmental Problems were named: (Arranged according to Frequency) Problem: Frequency: 1. Water Resources Management 16 2. Global Warming 13 3. Solid Waste Management 10 4. Soil Acidity 7 5. Landslide/ Soil Erosion 6 6. Forest Denudation 4 7. Eutrophication 2 8. Wildlife Extinction 1 All of the samples mentioned water resource management as the most pressing problem in the community. The lack of supply for portable water is a problem ever since. There is a limited potential source which according to them is probably due to slash and burn practice of farmers. Second most pressing issue is the feeling of hotness due to Global warming. But most of the respondents do not understand the real score of what we are presently experiencing with the climate. They associate the lack of trees as the primary reason of
  • 5. the problem. Only very few, definitely from the education and Gov’t working sectors gat the right understanding. Solid waste management is among the most experienced perennial problem. Ten out of sixteen respondents said that this is due to the nature of our being Filipinos, the lack of discipline and also the lack of regard of the Barangay Officials to put garbage facilities in some strategic places for the proper disposal of bypassers. Most of the farmers and housewives understand their being unproductive in farming which they tell that their soil is becoming more acidic as time progresses. They have no choice but to use commercial fertilizers to improve their yield. Organic farming is in their knowledge but due to time and ease in application, they seem to ignore. The least pressing problems given are eutrophication, of which only from the education sector have identified. They believe this as caused by residents who wash clothes in the river; wildlife extinction which according to the church leader needs a consideration for it is a gift of our Creator and an order to preserve nature.
