New Years By: November 2007 Maggie and Christalla
New Years Day is on January 1rst. This holiday became a holiday in the year of 1752. The ancient Romans decided that this should be a holiday because they wanted people to believe that they could exercise more, eat healthier foods and start new and leave the old year behind.
This holiday is celebrated by people coming together to enjoy food and wish others a happy New Year. People celebrate this holiday in houses and restaurants or other public places around the world. People celebrate this holiday because it only comes once a year and they want to forget about the past and think about the new year.
On New Year’s Eve, many people stay up until midnight and watch different celebrations on television. One very popular one happens in New York in Times Square. Thousands of people gather in Times Square and countdown the last 10 seconds of the old year. They watch a big ball drop and then everyone screams, “Happy New Year!” People also sing “Auld Lang Syne.” Photo from: http://www.timessquarenyc.org/nye/nye.html
