Hi this is David Johnson. In this presentation I'm going to explain activity one, building the vision, for the foundations in graduate study in business class.
The purpose of this activity is for you to articulate your professional and educational aspirations and then to explore how Northcentral can help you meet those aspirations. The time required to do this activity could range from 6 to 12 hours depending upon how long you want to spend exploring the resources at north-central, like the library, the writing center, and for Ph.D. students, the dissertation center. There are a number of documents you need to read and there is a discussion post you need to make by Wednesday and a reply post by Sunday. It’s a good idea to spend some time now to acquaint yourself with Northcentral resources, so you will know what’s there for future use. This could really help in the longrun.
Here are the readings you need to do. There is a welcome message from the Dean. There are a number of readings about careers in business so you could spend as much time as you like here. The Best Careers 2011 in Business Jobs website provides the top paying jobs for that year. The Career Center: Career Field – Business website describes various jobs in business. The Careers in Business Administration website describes typical jobs in business administration. Finally, the National Association for Business Economics Career Center website describes jobs in the field of economics.
For Ph.D. students there is also some explanatory material text in the syllabus and in the course room that explains what is the difference between a PhD degree and an applied doctorate, such as DBA and EdD. You have an opportunity to review the backgrounds of the northcentral faculty, and finally there is a document that that explains how to prepare discussion post.
The graded assignment for this activity is for you to post 150 to 200 words in a discussion thread. You can find the location to do this in the syllabus and course room. The deadline for this is Wednesday at at midnight Arizona time. There's a link that helps you sync Arizona time with your time zone. For this post you need to include the information that you see on the screen, and it would be a good idea to simply use these as headings for your post. Provide your background and your interests. What special areas of research or professional interests do you have? Provide your personal and professional vision. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Northcentral and you. Explain how you see your education at northcentral fitting into your personal and professional interests Northcentral resources. Explain which resources you feel comfortable accessing. Resources include the library, the Writing Center, and the Dissertation Center. Then explain which resources you think you're going to be needing more support for Finally, you are asked to provide with two outside resources that you have read recently and is relevant to your educational and professional goals. This could be a book, article or a scholarly website, and were asking that you use APA to cite these
Then we’re asking you to reply to another student, and that your reply be 75 to 100 words long. The deadline for this is midnight on Sunday. It's important that your response be substantive. In another words, it provides meaty content. You're going to want to discuss something that the other student has posted and give your reaction to it.
You don’t upload a document for this activity. You post your assignment in a Message box. First go to the Activity 1. Then scroll all the way down. There you will see Assignment Outcomes and a message box. Type your entry into the message box and click the Add New Discussion Entry button. Your entry will appear beneath underneath the Discussion entries are in reverse chronological order sentence. Here is where posts from other members of the class will appear as well. Scroll down to read them. Scroll back up to the Message box to post a reply to them
Writing in this class typically uses APA form, otherwise known as scholarly writing. APA is the American Psychological Association. However for a discussion post, the form is more casual, but you still need to use a professional tone and use proper grammar and sentence structure. We are asking you to cite your outside sources using APA. You might as well get into the habit of doing that right now. Please note that you shouldn’t follow the example that's in the Preparing the Discussion Post Document that I mentioned earlier. In that document they don't set cite the outside sources using APA, and we would like you to use APA in this assignment.
Here are some tips for you to complete this assignment. For all of the work in this course you need to spread the work out and give yourself sufficient time. Don't start working on it over the weekend. It's always best to do a little bit every day if you can. It would be a good idea, if you haven't done so, to spend some time reviewing the following sites. Number one would be the library, and I'd highly recommend that you set up software called RefWorks and install Cite to Write. I provide you the navigation below. This is going to really help you through your studies here. You can download article citation information from the library databases, and then you can cite them right into your paper. It will automatically format the citation using APA and automatically create a reference list at the end of your document. Now, the times that I have quoted for taking this assignment does not include learning RefWorks. You can have to do that on your own. It isn’t necessary for this assignment or this course. I'm just pointing you in that direction for your future use. Please note that I can't provide you with technical help installing it or using it. There are lots of resources out there for you to do that so you’re going to have to do this on your own. I just highly recommend that you do so at some point in time. Also at the library are number of videos you can watch on how to do research and use the databases and so forth. I show you the navigation on the screen Lastly there is a resource at the library called Website evaluation. I show you the navigation on the screen. This will help you determine what is a scholarly website, as that is one of the resources you can cite in your post.
You should also spend some time reviewing the Writing Center. There is a Writing Handbook that I recommend you leaf through. In particular, you should check out the Northcentral writing process, conducting research, providing pre-writing strategies, and revising the draft for focus and organization. That can really help you with your writing, and writing is important in graduate school-- especially learning to write in a scholarly manner. Also in the Writing Center are sections on academic integrity, resources for writers, and something called Smartthinking, which is a tutor service that you can use to help with your writing.
And lastly for Ph.D. Students, you might want to review the Dissertation Center and in particular the Doctoral Candidacy Resource Guide.
Instructors in the Foundations class have four days, not three, to grade and give you feedback on your assignment. So at the latest, you should receive your graded assignment back with feedback by Thursday. I've also provided the grading scale here at the Northcentral. An A is considered excellent. An A- to a B+ is considered above average. A B to a B- would be considered adequate. A C+ to a C is would indicate that there needs improvement, and finally a grade below a C would be an F, or not-acceptable. Well, I look forward to getting your first assignment and hope you get a chance to spread the work out to give yourself adequate time to complete the assignment. I the hope that this presentation has been helpful to you. Thanks
