Three (practices and) principles
Students’ Errors and Misconceptions
(Principle 1) Based on Previous Learning
Students come to the classroom with conceptions of numbers grounded in
their whole-number learning that lead them astray in the world of rational
numbers; e.g. multiplying always makes numbers bigger.

          Teachers must engage students’ preconceptions
Understanding requires factual knowledge

Similaire à Here are some key points about the pedagogical principle of understanding requiring both factual knowledge and conceptual frameworks:- Students need to learn basic facts and procedures, but these are not sufficient for understanding without conceptual frameworks to organize and use this knowledge. - Conceptual frameworks allow students to see how different facts and ideas relate to each other. They provide mental structures for comprehending new information.- Well-developed conceptual frameworks enable students to apply what they know to new situations and problems. Factual knowledge without frameworks tends to remain disconnected and hard to use productively. - Teaching should aim to develop both factual knowledge and conceptual frameworks in parallel. New facts are best learned when linked to existing frameworks, and frameworks evolve

Here are some key points about the pedagogical principle of understanding requiring both factual knowledge and conceptual frameworks:- Students need to learn basic facts and procedures, but these are not sufficient for understanding without conceptual frameworks to organize and use this knowledge.
