9. My experience at Argosy University has been superb. I have participated in both campus and online classes throughout my degree program and have maintained a 4.0 GPA. I have learned from my teachers, particularly because they are practicing in the field of psychology themselves. While studying at Argosy University, I have participated in a mock interview to improve my techniques, completed two literature reviews on PTSD and Internet Addiction, mentored other students as a Student Ambassador, and learned the ins-and-outs of counseling theories. 20. Example: Case Study Of Katherine Abstract: The case study on Katherine is by far the most exciting exercise I have completed while studying Psychology. I found it to be extremely helpful and interactive. To actually study Katherine on a weekly basis as well as determine different diagnosis possibilities from our readings was informative, hands on and fun. The case study with Katherine started off surface level and broadened as the sessions went on. With each session, we learned more about Katherine’s history and the symptoms she portrayed. 21. Example: Internet Addiction Abstract: Internet addiction has yet to be defined as a disorder in the DSM-IV but has been a growing problem world wide. Many psychologists have given the term Internet addiction a definition of their own but each definition differs. Some believe Internet addiction to fall under the substance abuse disorder category while others believe it is an impulse control disorder, such as gambling. After extensive research on this subject, I have found that Internet addiction possesses characteristics of both a substance abuse disorder and an impulse control disorder. Example: Substance Prevention Program Flyer Abstract: I believe that by including both the signs and symptoms of drug abuse and the signs and symptoms of drug dependence, the recipients of the flyer would have a better understanding between the two. I would also end my flyer with a section that explains how drug abuse can lead to drug addiction. I would be sure to include local help groups and hotlines people could use for support. Example: Ethics In Psychology Abstract: The scenario chosen for debate by my group and myself was the ethical challenge of deciding if a death row inmate who is suffering from a mental condition should be given medication to make him/her mentally stable so they may be executed. We studied the case of Gregory Thompson, an inmate being held in a Nashville prison who committed murder in 1985. Gregory Thompson began to show signs of schizophrenia shortly after he was incarcerated. While on trial, Mr. Thompson did not show any signs of mentally instability. Being that Mr. Thompson is on death row, the ethical dilemma of whether or not the state should be allowed to medicate him so that his sentence can be carried out, has been questioned. 24. Example: Adolescent Brain Development Abstract: Many scientists have studied the developing adolescent brain, but an explanation for teenage risky behavior is still in question. According to Santrock (2008), “Changes in the limbic system during puberty may lead adolescents to seek novelty and to need higher levels of stimulation in order to experience pleasure” (p. 394). This certainly would explain why my brother felt the need to dodge traffic for fun. There seems to be a wide range of ideas on why adolescents insist on pushing their luck. According to Santrock (2008), “Leading researcher Charles Nelson argues that while adolescents are capable of very strong emotions, their prefrontal cortex hasn’t developed enough to allow them to control these passions” (p. 394). Still, another researcher suggests that the connections between neurons affecting emotional, physical and mental abilities are incomplete in adolescents, therefore, it is difficult for adolescents to control their emotions, impulses, and judgments (Huebner, 2000, p. 1). So is it a lack of self-control or the need for higher levels of stimulation that make adolescents adrenaline junkies? Or could it be a combination, mixed with a bit of adolescent egocentrism? 25. Example: Interviewing Techniques Abstract: When most people think of forensic psychology, they automatically picture the FBI and criminal profiling. Though this sounds like dangerous yet exciting work, a forensic psychologist may be responsible for much more then profiling criminal minds. Forensic Psychologists not only conduct interviews and assessments on criminals, but are also involved in many custody hearings and disability evaluations. When conducting my research on the interviewing techniques of Forensic Psychologists, I learned that the interview process involved in forensics, is anything but traditional. Applied Psychology
26. Example: Mock Interview Reflection Abstract: After reviewing my recorded mock interview, I mostly felt relieved that it hadn’t been a complete disaster! Actually, I discovered both positive and negative aspects of my interview. The purpose of the interview was to conduct a counseling interview with a “client” who was going through a career crisis. She had been feeling depressed and anxious and was associating the two with extreme stress revolving around her current job. She was contemplating an extreme career change and had come to therapy to discuss this situation. Of course, this scenario was make-believe and meant as a practice exercise. 27. Lifelong learning is essential for any person in the helping professions. How can we help others if we cannot maintain a continuous learning life style? I plan on achieving my lifelong learning by attending events/conferences/and seminars involving my field of study.
