In 1965, University of Florida football players were suffering from heat-related illnesses due to losing fluids and electrolytes through sweating. University physicians worked with coaches to develop a carbohydrate and electrolyte-rich sports drink called Gatorade. The new drink helped replenish what players lost through sweating and helped the Gators start winning games. Today, Gatorade is widely used by athletes at many levels of collegiate and professional sports to stay hydrated and replace nutrients lost through exercise.
