My name is James Florence Quick show of hands for anyone that has heard of WVS? I ’m going to tell you a bit about what we do at WVS, give you some example charities that we work with and then how we can help you. Before I talk about the charity, a quick background on me: Firstly - I ’m not a vet I was actually an IT Project Manager, before I saw the light and realised how boring a job like that really is. I did what any normal person would do and went to Africa.
I signed up for a 3 month wildlife conservation programme in Zambia in the second largest national park on the continent, kafue national park
3 months turned to 2 years and I was now working in a wildlife sanctuary, still in Zambia, rescuing animals from all over the country.
2 years turned to 8 years and I had now established the countries only elephant orphanage to rescue baby elephants orphaned when poachers kill the mothers for their tusks. We set up anti-poaching patrol teams and whole education unit as well.
In October 2009 I met the WVS founder Luke Gamble during the filming of Vet Adventures, which some of you may have seen on TV. While in Zambia, Luke offered me a job and
and by Jan 2010 I was back in the UK and had started with his charity WVS.
Focusing on the Vet trips and the Disaster Emergency Response Teams, as these are likely to be the areas you may want to get involved in.
We are a small team based in Cranborne in Dorset and we provide veterinary assistance to over 400 animal welfare charities all around the world. A lot of these charities are in developing countries that either don ’t have access to vets and veterinary supplies, or it’s incredibly expensive to do so.
I ’m sure this is the part that most of you are thinking you may be able to get involved. I have some example trips to show you, but here is a good example of what you may be doing on one of our trips.
Spay neuter campaigns / rabies prevention Community farm animal clinics / disease prevention Wildlife - TB testing / health checks Team of 7 people (including 1 student) 1,598 - birds vaccinated against Newcastles Disease 1,072 dogs vaccinated against Rabies
In 2007, there was political unrest in Kenya, resulting in 2 months of bloodshed. 1,000 people were killed and 500,000 were displaced, flooding to IDP camps, along with their livestock that they depend on for their livelihood.
Haiti - We were looking to send a team to do a mass vaccination of the livestock for the farmers, just after the disaster had happened. Rather than sending a WVS team, it was better for us to support a vet team from the Dominican Republic who speak the language, are close by and able to comitt to long-term support. Hungary Toxic Spill - Had the expertise, but couldn ’t get the burn cream in Hungary. We put out an appeal and kept supplies filtering over to them. Australian Bush Fires - Support with wound dressings, burn cream and other veterinary aid Egypt -
WVS sent our first Disaster Emergency Response Team - The mission was to vaccinate, worm and treat as many animals as possible. - Animal welfare to help human welfare. (Internally displaced person)
Visit the WVS website - video from this trip is there.
