The season of love is here, February 14th is fast approaching, and Valen ne
cards have been in the shops since the New Year so there's no excuse!
Demonstra ng our love for another person is important, choosing the right
card with the right verse, wri ng the right things inside and remembering to
deliver or post it in a mely way, all show the other person that you love
them. Throw in a nice gi% and a meal at a posh restaurant and surely that's
love isn't it?
You've all seen the advert, 'a dog's life is not just for Christmas.' Well here's
another one: 'love isn't just for Valen ne’s day.'
The Bible tells us that: 'Love is pa ent, love is kind. It does not envy, it does
not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it
is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in
evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes,
always perseveres.'
How many of us experience this kind of love? The gimmicks are great and are
o%en well received by those we love, but can we con nue to demonstrate
love on the other 364 days of the year?
Jesus came to show us how to love each other, but I don't remember any
men on of Valen ne cards in the Bible, only real love, only the demonstra on
of loving another person as you yourself want to be loved.
Why don't you try this... Take the word love out of the Bible reading above
and insert your own name before each statement, read it through slowly and
see how it feels. Do you recognise
yourself? Can any of us honestly say
that's how we always behave around
those we love? Maybe it's something to
ponder on at this me of year or even a
work in progress...

Christmas Gi$s
At Christmas there was an opportunity to give a gi% towards
the church’s fabric fund. Thank you for your generosity; the
appeal raised £315 some of which was ‘gi% aided’ and will
eventually yield more from the taxman. On Christmas Eve we had such a good
turn out for the Chris ngle service with standing room only - we were able to
send £151 to the Children’s Society. Thank you for your support.

New Air Ambulance for Wiltshire
Wiltshire Air Ambulance Charitable Trust (WAACT) has signed a 10-year contract in Swindon
with Heli Charter Ltd for a new helicopter, which will come into service at the end of the
year when the lease on the current 12 year old aircra% expires.
The charity’s Trustees selected a Bell 429, which is the world’s newest and most advanced
light twin-engine helicopter in service, equipped with the latest in-flight technology. Prior
to delivery, the aircra% will be fiBed out with the most recent Aerolite equipment to meet
the highest helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS)
specifica on.
The Wiltshire helicopter will be the first Bell 429 to operate as
an air ambulance in the UK. It has a top speed of 150 knots and
a range of 400 miles making rapid response to any incident
within the county achievable within minutes.

Focus on Garden Crime
Over the past few weeks there have been a number of reported the%s from gardens
in villages around Highworth. On 28th November and 12th December, saddle
stones were taken from Sevenhampton. On 18th December a post-box (which is a
4% high metal plinth with a concrete dove cot on top) was taken from Inglesham.
Please be aware of suspicious vehicles or persons taking a interest in garden
ornaments or furniture. If you have any informa on regarding the the%s, please

General garden security advice includes:

When plan ng, put heavy stone in the boBom of pots or planters to make
them more difficult to be moved.
*
If possible, anchor valuable garden ornaments or
furniture to the ground and keep a photographic
record to help officers to trace items back to
their owner.
*
Security mark items in your shed and any valuable
items that might be in your garden.
*
Make sure your shed is secure, that there are no
panels which could be easily damaged and fit
good quality locks and an alarm.
*
Consider securing items such as ladders, bikes or
large power tools in your shed by chaining them to
a strong anchor point.
*
Put all your tools and any children's bikes or outdoor toys securely away once
they are finished with.

Plan ng bushes with prickly leaves or thorns close to any entry points could
deter a poten al thief. A gravel pathway or driveway can also act as a good
deterrent.
∗
Consider installing outdoor mo on-sensor security lights.
∗
If you are away on holiday, ask your neighbours or a friend to keep an eye on
your home and garden.

10. The Simple Approach...
Some mes the simple approach to a problem can achieve the desired result.
This has proven to be the case when the village school wanted to improve safety for the
children at drop off and pick up mes. Both the car park and the footpath in front of the
school were key problem areas
One of the school Governors, a Parish Councillor and the Head Teacher worked
together to get things moving.
The car park was marked out for two disabled
parking spaces and a safe walking zone for all
pedestrians. This was achieved by u lising the
company contracted to mark out sports areas in
the school playground to also undertake the
work in the car park. Funding for this was a
shared cost between the school and the Parish
Council.
The footpath in front of the school has long been a safety risk to all pedestrians and
together with constant flooding, has made life unpleasant for all using it.
With the support from the Borough drainage team, the underground pipes were
cleared of tree roots, solving most of the flooding problems. The contractors laying the
high voltage cable through the village were “persuaded” to fund the removal of the old
footpath surface and to lay a new tarmac surface. The school worked with the parents,
so that these works could take place during the morning drop-off me.
Next on the safety list is the crea on of a school safety zone along Old Vicarage Lane. It
is hoped that this can form part of the overall village 20 mph zone to help control “rat
running” through the village.
Further village ini a ves will include improvements to footpath 17 (which runs through
the solar farm on the Highworth Road to Nigh ngale Lane) as well as work on the
drainage ditches from Highworth Road to Nigh ngale Lane.

11. The F & E Harris Memorial Trust
New Community Transport Scheme
The Trust will be funding a community door-to-door transport scheme. It is designed to help
people aged 55 and over who live in South Marston to get out and about and who do not have
their own transport. The scheme started opera on on the 1st January 2014. It will be free of
charge to users.
The scheme will be run by the Royal Voluntary Service Transport (RVST) based in Liden on behalf
of the Trust. Those who require the use of the scheme will need to register their details with
RVST before booking a service requirement. Drivers opera ng with RVST are volunteers and will
stay with the client, help if required, or be available during total journey me.

The scheme will typically cover transport needs for trips such as aBending health appointments,
shopping trips and visits to family and friends. A more comprehensive lis ng of acceptable uses
and condi ons produced by the Trust is available when registering with RVST.
The Trust is looking for volunteer drivers to work with the volunteer drivers employed by RVST.
Training, opera ng method and contract details will be supplied by RVST. Contact: Brian

Disabled Parking Spaces
Unfortunately, there have been some instances where able-bodied
people have parked in the new disabled parking spaces at the school.
It would be greatly appreciated if these
spaces could be kept free for families at
the school and in the community who
need them.
There have been occasions when disabled
members of the school community have
been unable to park due to unauthorised
use of these bays.

Your weekly recycling collec ons will become fortnightly from Monday, 3rd

19. Swindon Allotments & Leisure Garden Association
Back in 1962 a group of gardeners and allotment holders in Swindon got together to
form a club, with the inten on of selling a few seeds and bulbs amongst themselves.
The club quickly grew to 60 members and it used to take five days to put together
seed orders. Membership peaked at around 800 in the late 1990's but these days the
number is closer to 350. The Associa on is always on the lookout for new members
and is run by a commiBee which meets once a month at the All Saints Church Hall in
Southbrook Street, Swindon. Regular open members mee ngs are held on the third
Thursday of each month at Gorse Hill Community Centre.
SALGA has its own shop, located at the Pickards Field site in the Pinehurst area of
Swindon. It is run by the volunteers and is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays
between the hours of 10am and 12 noon. SALGA also holds an annual local schools
garden compe on to encourage younger people into growing for pleasure and runs
regular ou ngs and holidays for members.

20. Spinal Injuries Association
“Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people
rebuild lives a%er injury”
Great Bri<sh Fish and Chip Supper – Friday 16th May 2014
Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip
supper on Friday 16th May 2014 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and
suppor ng SIA’s vital services.
You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper
at your local community centre.
SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and ps, recipes, invita ons and
dona on envelopes. By invi ng 8 friends and asking them to donate an addi onal
£5.00 means you will raise at least £40.00 from your supper but we will also give you
addi onal fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.
In 2014 SIA is celebra ng its 40th anniversary and so we want to make the baBer maBer
and raise £25,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £12,500 from
the suppers.
The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Associa on offer
support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a
spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publica ons
which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives a%er spinal cord injury.
Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an
es mated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.
Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says, “The Fish and Chip Supper is a
wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also
encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to
raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wan ng to run a fun
evening with your group.

21. Community Speed Watch Scheme
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO OPERATE THE SPEEDGUN
SPEEDWATCH UNIFORM PROVIDED
The Community Speed Watch (CSW) scheme, run by the Swindon Borough
Council in conjunc on with the Police, gives local people the chance to be
ac vely involved in making South Marston’s roads safer for everyone in the
village.
With the expansion of the village, many more cars are expected to use the
village roads and, if the 20mph zone is introduced, the CSW Team will be there
to help ensure that it is observed.
If you can spare just an hour or two a month at a me to suit you (maybe
before or a%er work) then please contact the village co-ordinator:
