“Genre” means different types/categories of
writing. Print and digital titles can be
separated into 2 main genre categories:
       1. Fiction           2. Non-Fiction aka
 • a made up story          Informational Text
 • can tell about things    • has facts that can be
   that could happen          checked and proven
 • is read for fun          • the author is considered
 • characters may be like     an expert on the topic
   real people or are       • it IS TRUE!

Realistic Fiction
Realistic fiction is made up of stories that
could really happen. Contemporary
realistic fiction is realistic fiction that is
set in modern time.
Examples of Realistic
        Fiction
•Because of Winn Dixie
•Crash
•Holes
•Monster
•Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Historical Fiction
Historical fiction is made up of stories
that take place in a certain time and
place in the past. Real historical
figures and settings may be included
in an historical fiction story.

    •A Boy at War
    •Across Five Aprils
    •Ben and Me
    •Sign of the Beaver
    •Dear America Series
Folklore
Folklore includes fairy tales,
legends, myths, and fables that
people told one another over the
years. Later, the stories were
written down.

 •Beauty and the Beast
 •Paul Bunyan
 •Cinderella
 •John Henry
Fantasy
Fantasy is fiction that has elements that are
not real. Sometimes this includes talking
animals or characters with magical powers.
There’s usually a conflict between good and
evil.

•Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe
•Lord of the Rings

Mystery
Mysteries are stories that have a real
setting and a problem to be solved.

twists, and an answer to the problem.

Science Fiction
Science Fiction is made up of stories
that blend fact and fiction with futuristic
technology.

Poetry is verse written to inspire thoughts and
feelings in the reader. It often uses rhyme and
rhythm, or it can be written in free verse.
