Introduction
•Communication:
–… happens through intonation, voice, words, look, gesture, body shape, movement… and is about our thoughts, intentions, emotions, feelings.
–… enables or holds back cooperation, understanding, engagement.
–… encounters various barriers… which come from differences in thinking, reactions on differences in opinions, differences in status between people, lack of courage, censorship,…
–These barriers appear in coaching too.
•Images (photographs) help to overcome those barriers.
•Image is not defined, is not straightforward, it is a vehicle of various meanings, has a metaphoric nature…. thus, potentially „gives” the voice to each person, allows each thought, even if difficult or not rational. It creates chances for new points of view, new connections, new sources of mental, spiritual, or social energy. It enriches and deepens coaching.

In-depth with Coaches: On what basis do you decide to use images or not?
•When a client is stuck and can’t go deeper.
•When I don’t know where to go.
•During workshops – always as a combination with other techniques.
•When the client can’t go deeper.
•During workshops – always part of process up front. Individual work – I make self into on the first session with client pictures and invite to work with images, to try. Only when ‘no’, I don’t work with it.
•To help your client to expand his/her insights
•Just to "warm up".

•First of all, the image makes people less censor their speech which positively affects the investigation to the topic.
•Working with images is for my clients something new, unusual and little shy at the beginning. Over a time they become adept at working with photos and in subsequent sessions they often want to work with them again. Some of them have considerable difficulty in learning how to look at pictures and talking about what they see, what a picture evokes in them and how it inspires. With time, I observe that they become more open and fluent.

•The image touches areas in the subconscious that open up a surprising perspective on the already known situations and feelings. Working with the image peeled myself of the layers 'what is OK to say "and" what is not proper". Allow to look inside myself and move emotions. Reinforces motivation to change and acceptance of "the perspective of self.”
•The image seems to "light up" more of the coachees' brains to enable them to expand their perspectives and talk more authentically.

•Picture projections are a great way to provoke thoughts, feeling/ emotions leading to actions. While the projections are non threatening they are an evocative tool to help thought to begin to happen. The key is to look for the story that unfurls and how the coach can pick those key moments by being fully present. Processing the information in the present is a great start point to help the client develop powerful break through. I have started using my own collection of pictures (random ones) in 'Behavioral Event Interviews', essentially to review contributions made by the candidates as 'Leaders, Team Players, Individual Contributors, & to check their alignment with the corporations culture, besides validating the results of psychometric report'.

•My clients commonly say how shockingly accurate the image they choose speaks to exactly what they need at the moment. The sessions are more fun, creative, relaxed, thereby accessing more right brain insights with images than without. I know when a client is stuck, this is the tool to use. Points of You™ tool opens people gently into territory they didn't realize they were fighting with. What people gain is insight and clarity, which then provides movement for the next step (at least).
•Using the image during session is absolutely positive change for the clients. Questions, conversation often leads misunderstanding, however, images do not turn away. I am approaching to a brain expert to research how images influence the brain. I will soon give you first opinion which is not exactly what the coaching game can affect the clients.

•I've been using images for years in my coaching practice and POY nearly from its beginning. The words "magic" "deep" "incredible" "wonderful" often come in the feed-backs. Smiles and laughters, cries and sighs are very present in the session. But they come and go very easily. POY helps the coachee to go very deep very quickly and to come back in "real" life, with his new insights and actions to take very smoothly!

•The use of image in individual or group coaching sessions have been providing a great improvement on how people connect with their issues, with themselves, and with others. I noticed that the visual stimuli works as a catalyst for personal development because the strength on looking into different perspectives while bypassing logic and rational thoughts. It is surprisingly interesting to watch people reactions, body and face expressions while they are looking into the pictures. The answers to the questions and the whole process of playing makes facing difficult issues of something more natural, more authentic and this has been empowering people to go deeper and be motivated to act and change.

•People react differently; those who are not "sensitive" to the image are sceptical about working with images in the course of the session; they say that it makes no difference to them.
•It depends on the moment and the people whom the coaching session is led with. Not everyone responds to the image. Recommended later than of the 1st session. Great for kids.
•Images allow for deeper insight and strongly diversified session.
•Visualization helps in the process of inspiring and learning.

•I think that image is extremely supportive in the coaching session. It allows to open up and look at issues from a different perspective. It enriches and diversifies the session.
•Coaching sessions with the use of image allowed me to gain a deep insight into the subject. I moved away from my current way of thinking, got a new point of view. I had the feeling that I achieve concrete results, do a step forward in understanding the issues that concerned me. Images also led me to speak about difficult topics. These are the most important points.
•Through metaphor and analogy it is possible to combine and integrate the various pieces of the puzzle, awaken creativity and open on a creative approach to 'problems' or challenges.

Selected comments: Image in Coaching
•The image has allowed me to reach deeper layers of consciousness, I felt even that it fishes out what is in the subconscious. Working with the image gave me a deep insight into myself and I discovered hitherto unexplored motives, needs, concerns and their sources.
•I believe that the use of images is a powerful tool to connect ideas and thoughts that don't always come to the surface in other coaching sessions. It is very impressive and adds a bit of magic to the session as well as a deeper understanding of the problem and its potential solutions.

About Points of You™
•The Points of You ™ approach in coaching was developed by two Israeli professionals in the field of personal development: Efrat Shani and Yaron Golan (2006).
•It combines knowledge and experience in coaching, psychotherapy, phototherapy, use of metaphor, active learning.
•Its fundamental element is use of images (photography) along with words in the coaching process.
•There are two key tools used by Points of You: The Coaching Game and Puntum, as well as various processes, such as e.g. My Photo Album.
•Use of photography in therapy developed in 70-ies of the XX cent. The same with the use of photography in anthropology and social sciences. Visual expression itself (drawing, collage, painting) is natural for people (from childhood we formulate ideas by drawing), it doesn’t require format education (as writing) and has been used in therapy and artetherapy since many years.

How Images Help Overcome Barriers in Coaching

  • 2. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Introduction •Communication: –… happens through intonation, voice, words, look, gesture, body shape, movement… and is about our thoughts, intentions, emotions, feelings. –… enables or holds back cooperation, understanding, engagement. –… encounters various barriers… which come from differences in thinking, reactions on differences in opinions, differences in status between people, lack of courage, censorship,… –These barriers appear in coaching too.

  • 7. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska In-depth with Coaches: On what basis do you decide to use images or not? •When a client is stuck and can’t go deeper. •When I don’t know where to go. •During workshops – always as a combination with other techniques. •When the client can’t go deeper. •During workshops – always part of process up front. Individual work – I make self into on the first session with client pictures and invite to work with images, to try. Only when ‘no’, I don’t work with it. •To help your client to expand his/her insights •Just to "warm up".
  • 8. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Selected comments: Image in Coaching •First of all, the image makes people less censor their speech which positively affects the investigation to the topic.
  • 9. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Selected comments: Image in Coaching •The image touches areas in the subconscious that open up a surprising perspective on the already known situations and feelings. Working with the image peeled myself of the layers 'what is OK to say "and" what is not proper". Allow to look inside myself and move emotions. Reinforces motivation to change and acceptance of "the perspective of self.” •The image seems to "light up" more of the coachees' brains to enable them to expand their perspectives and talk more authentically.
  • 10. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Selected comments: Image in Coaching •Picture projections are a great way to provoke thoughts, feeling/ emotions leading to actions.
  • 11. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Selected comments: Image in Coaching •My clients commonly say how shockingly accurate the image they choose speaks to exactly what they need at the moment.
  • 12. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Selected comments: Image in Coaching •I've been using images for years in my coaching practice and POY nearly from its beginning.
  • 13. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Selected comments: Image in Coaching •The use of image in individual or group coaching sessions have been providing a great improvement on how people connect with their issues, with themselves, and with others.
  • 14. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Selected comments: Image in Coaching •People react differently; those who are not "sensitive" to the image are sceptical about working with images in the course of the session; they say that it makes no difference to them. •It depends on the moment and the people whom the coaching session is led with. Not everyone responds to the image. Recommended later than of the 1st session. Great for kids. •Images allow for deeper insight and strongly diversified session. •Visualization helps in the process of inspiring and learning.
  • 15. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Selected comments: Image in Coaching •I think that image is extremely supportive in the coaching session.
  • 16. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska Selected comments: Image in Coaching •The image has allowed me to reach deeper layers of consciousness, I felt even that it fishes out what is in the subconscious.

  • 19. Image in Coaching Dorota Raniszewska About Points of You™ •The Points of You ™ approach in coaching was developed by two Israeli professionals in the field of personal development: Efrat Shani and Yaron Golan (2006).
