3. Mission
Segundo Barrio Futbol Club seeks to use soccer as
a tool for social change by developing programs
that foster the physical, mental, and emotional
growth and development of boys and girls in El
Paso's Segundo Barrio neighborhood and beyond.
4. Origins
Segundo Barrio Futbol Club was founded in the
summer of 2011. Coach Simon and Coach Luis had
been coaching a soccer team at la Fe Preparatory
school since 2009. Aware of the interest in soccer
in the neighborhood, they decided to open up
participation to all children.
By the end of that summer, Segundo Barrio
Futbol Club had formed two teams.
7. Programs
Segundo Barrio Futbol Club has continued to
grow. Today there are two main programs. The
competitive travel team program and the Soccer
and Reading Club.
8. Programs
The competitive travel teams play year round in El
Paso’s Paso Del Norte Soccer league. There are
currently three teams with almost 50 children
ages 7 to 13.
12. Teams
Segundo Barrio Futbol Club seeks to provide
soccer instruction of the highest quality. All of the
coaches are licensed through the United States
Soccer Federation.
13. Soccer and Reading Club
The Soccer and Reading Club is based at Hart
Elementary that started in the fall of 2014. It is an
after school program where each week students
have two days of reading instruction and two days
of soccer instruction. There are currently almost
40 boys and girls in grades 2 through 5
participating in the club.
14. The Soccer and Reading Club is a
collaboration between Segundo Barrio
Futbol Club and El Paso Independent
School District. The program is
sponsored by Blue Sky Investment
Partners.
15. Soccer and Reading Club
Soccer and Reading Club seeks to improve
academic performance in reading through
activities such as literature circles, reader’s
theater, authoring books, and poetry.
Participants also receive two days of soccer
instruction by a qualified soccer coach.
16. Soccer and Reading Club
This year students studied, researched and
authored non fiction books on various subjects.
21. Soccer and Reading Club
Soccer and Reading Club students were invited to
recite the Pledge of Allegiance at City Hall in
November.
22. Our Players
Many of our players come from low income
families. If it were not for Segundo Barrio Futbol
Club most would not be playing organized sports.
Some of our players come from difficult family
situations. Participating in the soccer club gives
them extra support and provides an additional
safety net in their lives.
