L
et’s do a literary exercise
and imagine our era
through this image. A
great metal platform
comes floating forward
over a dark abyss. On the
immense plain we can see millions
of beings that are interacting in
innumerable ways. We can see
they’re enjoying themselves, but on
the edge of the platform, sat with
their legs hanging over the edge, we
can pick out the silhouettes of other
bodies. The majority have their
sights fixed on the empty horizon,
letting themselves be taken, but
now and again some turn their
heads towards the postmodern
desert and dream of stories about
people like themselves. They are
the writers who all around the
world try to open up new roads
in contemporary literature. They
also exist in Spain. And beyond
the labels imposed on them by
the media establishment and the
critics – Generation Nocilla, the
afterpop movement, the New Light,
the Mutantes group – to reduce
the inherent entropy (the majority
of them don’t even feel they have
anything in common) to this new
universe of writers, there are
coincidences in they way they face
up literally to the world.
You don’t need to listen to the
weather forecaster to know which
way the wind is blowing. “Literature
in Spain is starting to leave behind
fiefdoms as far as themes, styles
and aesthetic taboos are concerned.
Personally, I don’t do it to be against
anything or anybody. I hate aesthetic
conflicts. I’m simply speaking of me,
of my world, and that translates into
a type of literature that, according
to what they say, is modern.”
The person speaking is Agustín
Fernández Mallo. For several years
now the Galician writer has been
carrying the cross of being seen
as the architect of the new literary
wave, the pioneer. That is why, after
agreeing to take part in this report,
he made clear his opinions “are not
in any way extendable to the rest of
the writers”. The first part of his
trilogy Nocilla Project was served up
to the media in 2007 with a name
to baptize this group of authors
born between 1960 and 1976. But
for Mallo the label brings him out in
a rash. In his last e-mail before this
edition of Babylon went to print,
writer Jorge Carrión also clarified
something: “I think it would be
better (and all the authors in the
report are surely in agreement)
that you talk of
the Afterpop
movement and
not generation
Nocilla”.
More than

ago Stendhal
d e f i n e d

realism saying
that a novel
should be a
mirror that
passes along
a wide road.
Usually, the
first part of
his phrase
is cited, but
not what the
French writer
said later: “And
the man who
carries the mirror will be accused
by you of being immoral. It would
be more just to accuse the long
road where there is mire and even
more so the inspector of highways
who let the water stagnate and
form those mires.” The authors
of the new literature run together,
whether they like it or not, along
the long road of their era, reflecting
the debris of the world with a
broken mirror.
H
agamos el ejercicio

nuestra época a través
de esta imagen. Una
gran plataforma
metálica avanza
flotando sobre un abismo oscuro.
En la inmensa llanura podemos
observar a millones de seres que
interactúan de innumerables
formas, visiblemente entretenidos,
pero en el filo de la plataforma,
sentados con las piernas colgando
hacia sus límites, distinguimos
las siluetas de otros cuerpos. La
mayoría mantiene la mirada en
el horizonte
vacío, dejándose
llevar, pero de
vez en cuando
algunos giran
la cabeza hacia
el desierto
posmoderno, y
sueñan historias
sobre sus
semejantes. Son
los escritores
que, en todo el
mundo, tratan
de abrir nuevos
caminos en
la literatura
contemporánea.
En el caso
español, también
existen. Y
más allá de
las etiquetas
impuestas por el establisment
mediático y la crítica -generación
Nocilla, movimiento afterpop, la
Luz Nueva, grupo Mutantes- para
reducir la entropía inherente (la
mayoría de ellos ni siquiera se
sienten parte de algo común) a
este nuevo universo de escritores,
existen coincidencias en su modo
de enfrentarse literariamente al
mundo.
No falta escuchar al hombre
del tiempo para saber en qué
dirección sopla el viento.
“La literatura en España está
empezando a dejar atrás feudos
en cuanto a temáticas, estilos y
tabúes estéticos. Personalmente,
Sencillamente hablo
de mí, de mi mundo, y eso se
traduce en un tipo de literatura
que, según dicen, es actual.”
Habla Agustín Fernández Mallo.
Desde hace varios años el escritor
gallego carga con la cruz de ser
considerado el arquitecto de la
nueva ola literaria, el pionero. Por
eso después de aceptar participar
en este reportaje deja claro que
sus opiniones “no son de ningún
modo extensibles al resto de
escritores”. La primera entrega de
su trilogía Nocilla Project sirvió a
los medios de comunicación en
2007 para bautizar a este grupo de
autores nacidos entre 1960 y 1976,
pero a Mallo la etiqueta le produce
urticaria. En su último e-mail
antes de la impresión del número,
el escritor Jorge Carrión también
aclara algo: “Creo que sería mejor
(y todos los autores del reportaje
seguro que están de acuerdo) que
habléis de movimiento afterpop y
no de generación Nocilla”.
Stendhal definió hace más
de dos siglos la estética realista
diciendo que la novela debía ser un
espejo que se pasea por un ancho
camino. Se suele citar el comienzo
de su frase, pero no lo que el
francés dijo después: “¡Y el hombre
que lleva el espejo será acusado
por ustedes de ser inmoral! Más
justo sería acusar al largo camino
donde está el barrizal y, más aún,
al inspector de caminos que deja
el agua estancada y que se formen
los barrizales”. Los autores de la
nueva literatura recorren juntos,
quieran o no, el largo camino de
su época, reflejando los escombros
del mundo con un espejo roto.

P
reviously the author was a
person, almost always a man,
who wrote about his cell, the
sort of person who treasured a
lot of knowledge and threw it
into his work. It was common to believe
in or aspire to do ‘The Work’. Today
we create more from information, in
a system that is an open network, and
I believe that we believe more in the
contingency of things
// One of the things that post modernity
taught us is that nothing
thatdoesn’tcarryinsideit
a parody of itself – either
through irony, humour,
or self-consciousness–, is
credible.
// Put briefly, post
modernity is the
liberation of political and
aesthetic absolutisms.
// As regards the new
narrative in Spain, I
believe that we are all
at a reading crossroads
as far as fiction is
concerned.
// Let’s leave aside the
somewhat unfortunate term, the Nocilla
Generation. It’s a name that was given
us by cultural journalism and we, the
authors ourselves, were the first to be
surprised. We never thought of ourselves
as being or as making a generation out of
anything. Can you see me with a beret?
What is certain is that there is a new
narrative in Spanish. Give it whatever
name you like; it’s the words that speak.
// Copy, never. Literature is not for
copying the époque to which it belongs.
But I believe that, to be credíble, it ought
to elaborate images and metaphors that
are in tune with its times.
A
ntes el autor era una persona,
casi siempre hombre, que
escribía desde su celda, un
tipo que atesoraba mucho
conocimiento y lo vertía en
una obra. Era común creer o aspirar a
hacer La Obra.

// En pocas palabras,

I
n the prologue to Mutantes, the
representative anthology of
the group, I wrote that we are a
generation and a half of narrators
educated in the school of image
and the media, and in the school
of globalization, and in the school of
information heating up and global cooling
of the human structures of relationships.
Our novels and tales, among the most
creative and stimulating at the moment,
are characterized especially by:
1/ Assuming the literary tradition of
innovation, risk and renovation of the
forms and contents and, at the same time,
showing itself to be contaminated by
all the formats of mass culture (cinema,
television, comics, music, videogames,
etc.).
2/ Staying connected with the world
around us, in tune with the most
advanced developments in art and the
economy, politics and communications,
technology and consumption, society and
aesthetics, information, fashion, science
and sexuality, etc. In this sense, one could
say that information, the information that
circulates everywhere, as a contemporary
way of learning, is the main source for
feeding our creations.
Each of us would try, in short, to give
his written narrative all the excitement and
all the frustration and all the seduction
and the fascination that emanate in an
uncontrollable way from that outside
world redesigned as a gigantic and
ubiquitous fiction machine.
E
creaciones.
Cada uno de nosotros intentaría,
en suma, trasladar a su escritura
narrativa toda la excitación y toda la
frustración y toda la seducción y la
fascinación que emanan de manera
incontrolable de ese mundo exterior
rediseñado como una gigantesca y
ubicua máquina de ficción.

// Neither the pop subcultures nor critical theory had incorpora-

they did so, it burst in simultaneously, making room for a type
of work that is the result of a collision between extremes. Ni las

// The so-called Nocilla generation has turned out in reality to
be the tip of the iceberg of a redraft that began among indepen-

// Do you know, before the conference that brought us together

thout shape.

8. In naming the generation, I prefer the term for the group to be
Mutantes. This has a theoretical work behind it (Julio Ortega and
Juan Francisco Ferré), while the other title, Nocilla, is journalistic.
I believe I am the crític who has dedicated the most pages to the
Mutante group, and I have done it because I believe that its authors
are the greatest exponents of the renovation of Spanish narrative.
Although as an author I don’t feel part of the group, I have a good
relationship with them and a great admiration for their work.
These authors have caused a revolution that had been pending in
Spain since the time of the boom.
It’s not that there weren’t works and authors of interest before;
of course there were, and many of them and very good ones. But
they were just snipers.
The earlier authors acted on their own and that is why they didn’t
produce a renovating movement, something that is both practical
and theoretical at the same time, and on which young authors and
young readers can fix their attention.
That is why the Mutantes are not better than their elders. They are
just as good, but different.
Above all, they have gone back to turning literature into some-
thing that is pleasurable and fun without losing either its theore-
tical power or its stylistic potency.
The renovator doesn’t end up as the mutant, of course; there are
also very interesting authors outside the group, especially in Spa-
nish Latin America.
