Refractive Lens Exchange
3. Also known as clear lens
extraction, refractive lens exchange is
considered to be preferable to Lasik or PRK
procedures for patients diagnosed with
pronounced farsightedness (high hyperopia)
or presbyopia. Presbyopia is an age-related
gradual vision loss resulting in the inability to
focus on nearby objects, often evidenced by
the need for bifocals, reading glasses, or
adjustment of reading distances.
Refractive Lens Exchange
4. The refractive lens exchange procedure
substitutes an artificial intraocular lens (IOL)
for the patient’s compromised natural lens.
Lens options include fixed length monofocal
IOLs, multifocal IOLs, and what are known as
“accommodating” IOLs, which vary focus by
shifting position within the eye. Only a
qualified and highly experienced
ophthalmologist can determine which solution
is optimal for any patient.
