Being a consumer first a patient second part 1 (new york cosmetic dentist 10019)
1. Being a Consumer First, A
Patient Second (Part 1)

2. Being a Consumer First, A Patient
Second (Part 1)
§ One of the things that happens when patients sit in my chair is that they
tend to feel overwhelmed, intimidated – or both. But this limits the
dentist-patient relationship because then we’re not working on equal
footing. Sometimes, for instance, patients tell me what they think I want
to hear when, actually, the truth is a much better instrument to help me
form a diagnoses for what they really need.
§ I suppose it’s natural to feel this way. For so long, growing up, we were
taught to “listen to the doctor” and “don’t interfere.” Now, of course,
modern physician-patient relationships are built on mutual trust and the
free exchange of information. It’s the doctor who wants to listen to you
and, if you don’t “interfere,” how will you ever get the quality care you
really deserve?
3. Being a Consumer First, A Patient
Second (Part 1)
§
The best way to cast off those old-fashioned stereotypes concerning the physicianpatient relationship is to think of yourself not as a patient, but as a customer. After all,
you’re paying for a product or procedure, so it only makes sense that you should act
the same way in the dentist’s office as you do when you walk into a store.
§
You wouldn’t walk into Best Buy and choose the first big-screen TV you see on the
sales floor, would you? Of course not, so why would you take what your dental
provider says at face value, either?
§
Just as there are many different styles and makes of big-screen televisions – flat panel
versus widescreen, digital versus beta, etc. – the path to an A-List Smile is filled with
many different options, varieties, comfort levels and criteria. When you think of your
dentist as a retailer and yourself as a customer, you will feel much better about making
just the right selection for yourself.
4. Being a Consumer First, A Patient
Second (Part 1)
§ Here are some quick ways to do just that:
§ Ask questions: Don’t be uncomfortable asking for more information if you didn’t
quite comprehend what your dentist was saying the first time around. If you don’t
understand something – a dental term, a price quote, a recovery time or even the
name of the procedure itself – ask, and ask again, until you do. A good dental
provider will always encourage questions from a patient-customer, not discourage
them.
§ Verify approval: You should know what – and where – your dentist is approved to
practice. Most states have a dental board and website where you can check the
status of a dentist’s license, whether it’s current or suspended. Some sites offer
information about malpractice suits as well.
§ Note education and affiliations: Legitimate questions for you to ask your dentist
include what dental school they attended, if they’re certified and if they’re taking
continuing education classes. Associations for dentists and cosmetic professionals
include the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Academy of General
Dentistry and the American Dental Association.
