1. C L I N I C A L T I P S
Homoeopathic Treatment of Warts
2. Definition and Cause
Warts or Verrucae are skin growths caused by Infection of
the skin by Human Papilloma Virus(HPV)
Some varieties of HPV infect the outer layer of the skin
(epidermis) and stimulate rapid growth of cells giving rise
to warts
3. Mode of Infection
HPV may be transmitted by direct or close contact with
infected individual
An infected individual may spread infection to other
areas of his/her body by touch
Infection is also known to spread through contact with
infected materials such as towels/ razors etc.
HPV usually gains entry into the skin through minor
cuts/ breaks
Genital warts spread by skin to skin contact as well as by
genital , oral and sexual contact
4. Risk factors
Exposure to HPV does not necessarily result in
appearance of warts. Individuals at higher risk for
developing warts include:
Children and young adults
Persons with lowered/ compromised immunity such as
those with HIV , persons on immuno-suppressive drugs
such as organ transplant patients
5. Types of warts
Common warts/ Verruca Vulgaris
Appear as skin colored, fleshy, firm papules with
rough surface. Common sites are dorsum of hands,
fingers etc.
Plain warts
Appear as skin colored smooth papular lesions.
Common sited are face, dorsum of hands
Filiform warts
Appear as finger like projections with rough
surface. Common sites are neck, face , scalp
6. Types of warts
Plantar Warts found on the plantar surface(sole) of foot as
a skin colored area with an irregular surface. These may be
painful on pressure.
Genital warts present as a mass of verrucous tissue in the
genital area , prepuce, vagina, anal /peri-anal area.
Significantly genital warts may be transmitted to mouth,
tongue, lips of a patient by oral- sexual contact
7. Signs and symptoms
Warts are usually asymptomatic
At times plantar warts may be tender on pressure
due to pressure on an underlying nerve
Genital warts may cause itching, pain, vaginal
discharge, burning and bleeding
8. Prognosis
Left untreated a majority of warts may disappear
on their own over time
Proactive treatment may be advised to prevent
spread of infection to other sites and other
individuals and also for cosmetic reasons
Recurrence of warts is common
Certain strains of HPV are known to cause Cervical
dysplasia and Cervical Cancer, though no direct
correlation can be drawn between occurrence of
warts and development of Cervical Cancer
9. Homoeopathic Management
Homoeopathic medicines prescribed on the basis
of constitutional symptoms , general and mental
symptoms always give good results in the
treatment of warts
However in the absence of these symptoms,

20. Case Briefing
This case was seen in the OPD of NHMC Hospital in the year 2012. The interesting thing in this case is
that, I prescribed the usual medicines, like Causticum, Natrum Mur and Dulcamara on the basis of
symptoms ( i.e. Desire and aversion of foods, characters of warts, thermal reaction of the patient and after
consulting the Kent’s Repertory) , but did not get any response. One day while reading Boericke’s Materia
Medica, I go through the line “Hands covered with warts” in Ferrum Picricum, and after consulting Kent’s
Repertory in Rubrics “Warts, Hand” I found the medicine Ferrum pic, though in third grade, prescribed
the same medicine in the next visit and I got good response in first prescription and with the continuation
with the medicine the warts are almost cured.
