6. I, Marquita Byrd, am an educator by nature. The south and Midwest are
the cultures and geography that shaped my identity. Segregation was a key
issue during my youth and young adult life. I have experienced the
integration of public schools, desegregation of neighborhoods,
establishment of affirmative action and EEOC regulations. Workforce and
educational diversification are the positive byproducts of such legal
changes. Even though I have witnessed these monumental changes in
American society it seems that the more things change the more they stay
the same.
Poverty, not hopelessness, shaped my childhood life experiences. I
moved from field work to professor status in 29 yrs. As a single mother I
raised two special needs Black men. African American, Parent, Senior Citizen,
Woman, Neurodiverse, Disabled, Educator, Communication scholar, and
Theologian are the standpoints upon which I stand. They inform my
teaching, coaching, consulting, training, and speaking.
I am passionate, altruistic, creative, intellectual and practical, empowered,
mentor, coach and problem-solver: a woman of many talents. All of these
characteristics and capabilities are brought to bear on my mission to
educate and serve.
