10. CARE
10
CARE is a multidisciplinary laboratory conducting researches on
water-related issues and challenges. Its scientific approach is
structured around 3 axes: Water and Environment; Water and
Risks; Water and Health. It has in particular developed a strong
expertise in water pollution by plastic, coastal erosion and
salinity intrusion in the Saigon River and Mekong Delta.

11
The goal of LOTUS is to build a state-of-the art laboratory for
environmental studies, by developing an innovative integrated
approach, combining remote sensing, in situ measures and
large-scale modelling tools, to study the transport and fate of
water and matter in the river-estuary-ocean continuum, focusing
on North Viet Nam and the Red River Delta.

SEDES links socio-cultural, environmental and biological sciences
to investigate how the key socio-ecological services provided by
deltas’coastal waters can be sustained, restored and/or valorised
in different management and environmental contexts, and
under the pressure of global changes. SEDES is specifically
focused on the Mekong Delta in Vietnam.

In Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, DRISA aims to get an overview
of the mechanisms of drug resistance emergence and its
transmission at different scales, by developing observational
studies in hospitals and communities and in different
environments, experimental research to understand the
molecular mechanisms of resistance, and mathematical
modelling to assist in the development of public health policies.

EID focuses on mathematical and computational modelling of
infectious diseases, with the aim of characterising their spatial
dynamics, the underpinnings of these dynamics using statistical
and mathematical approaches, exploring potential diseases
interactions in space and time and designing optimal disease
control policies based on models calibrated with real data.

LUSES and M-TROPICS, established in Laos, Thailand, and
Vietnam, conduct researches and monitoring on the impact of
agriculture, climate change and land-use changes on soil
ecosystem services (in terms of erosion, soil quality, runoff/
infiltration, groundwater recharge, flooding, water quality and
roots), with the goal of identifying management techniques that
improve these services and environmental quality, income and
well being of farmers in South-East Asia.

RICE2 combines functional genomics and association genetics to
identify and characterise new genes and microorganisms
involved in the adaptation of crop plants (rice, coffee) to abiotic
and biotic environmental constraints, with the goal of launching
breeding programs to develop new rice and coffee varieties, with
improved quality and better adaptation to a changing
environment.
