What new product or service could you invent that would completely change your customers’ lives? How could you disrupt your entire sector? This practical workshop takes you through an innovation process, helping you to identify the clichés that exist in your sector and giving you the tools and time to redefine them. The workshop provides techniques to disrupt those clichés, generate genuine customer insights, turn opportunities into ideas through proven ideation methods, create a coherent concept and then articulate that concept. The workshop shows you how to realise a new product or service through a lean process of prototyping and iteration and we discuss case studies each step of the way. Find out why focus groups are not design research. Find out why the average brainstorm gives ideation a bad name and find out how to make your own innovation processes have tangible business outcomes. This workshop was ran at UX Cambridge in September 2013 and will be running again at the J. Boye conference in Århus, Denmark in November 2013.

We all know we're living in a period of massive, accelerating change. Yet how we think, how we work and what we produce as an advertising industry has changed remarkably little. This talk at the ICA in Toronto is a (hopefully practical) call for the industry to reclaim its progressive, and truly radical, roots.

Presentation for Advancing Learning Conference 2012 Description: Mitchell Kapor, founder of the Electronic Frontier, wisely said that “getting information off the internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant. Our instant-on, hyper-connected world provides us with millions upon millions of pieces of data anytime and anyplace in a simple click. But how do we sort through all that data to reach the relevant information we seek? Can we trust the “Googlebot” to give us or our students the best of what’s there? How do we tame that massive overload of data? The most valuable resource we have is community and shared resources. This workshop will introduce you to the curation community and the tools you’ll need to become an effective curator. Some of the tools discussed will be twitter, delicious, facebook, pinterest, tweeted times, paper.li, curated.by, scoop.it, zite, and flipboard. Do we each have a natural capacity for creativity? Can creativity be learned or enhanced? How do we ignite inventiveness? To be competitive in today’s world, it’s important to creatively respond to unanticipated challenges, make new connections, and adapt and continually improve. The good news is that our brains are built for creative problem solving, and it’s easy to discover and enhance our natural inventiveness. Just as scientists adopt scientific methods to design experiments and unravel the mysteries of the world, we need a complementary set of tools and techniques―creative thinking―when we want to invent rather than discover. We each have creative genius waiting to be unlocked! Join Audrey Marak to explore a set of methods and environmental factors you can use to enhance your imagination and increase your ability to create innovative ideas. It’s time to make creative thinking a core part of our development and to reinforce these lessons throughout our lives.

Many people would agree that creativity is the number one key skill for success in this century. However, by definition, creativity requires breaking rules, and defying the status quo. Additionally, sometimes following the rules—and even the laws—can actually stall progress. How do we make a good decision about which rules and laws to break, and which ones to follow? In order to maximize innovation, creative disobedience must be tolerated, encouraged, and even required, given the situation. Needless to say, doing this effectively is a tricky balance between disruption and maintaining forward progress on the overall goal. The most critical skill then, is understanding when to be creative—and to what degree—given the specific context. In this talk, I will take you on a full tour of what creativity is, what it isn’t, and why breaking the rules is sometimes necessary for progress. I will also discuss recent research on attitudes about creativity. For example, companies consider creativity one of the most-desired traits in their current and future employees, yet it is rarely rewarded in practice. Why the discrepancy? How can this be changed? Finally, I will give you a short ‘How To’ guide on increasing the creativity in the workplace, where it is highly desired, but often most discouraged.

-From LKNA15 The Kanban Iceberg: How to Go Below the Surface of a Shallow Implementation For many teams, kanban is an iceberg: They see only the single practice of visualization, but the mass of the system is below the surface in the form of the other practices, principles and values. This experience report details the journey that one company took to break the barrier of a wide but shallow kanban implementation to realize benefits like improved delivery outcomes and greater awareness of values such as transparency and flow. Beginning with depth-of-kanban assessments and through a series of experiments, like the emergence of a new role — the flow manager — and standard work, teams deepened their understanding of the kanban method and improved control over delivery. The deepened kanban also had knock-on effects on organization-level management and feedback loops, such as the ops review.

On December 14, 1986, a bizarre-looking aircraft so laden with fuel that its wingtips dragged on the runway took off from an airport in the Mojave Desert. It landed nine days later, becoming the first plane to circle the globe nonstop without refueling. That plane was designed by Burt Rutan, an aerospace engineer who would go on to design SpaceShipOne, which in 2004 became the world’s first manned commercial spacecraft. Having designed nearly four hundred unique aircraft, Rutan’s bold configurations stand out in an engineering practice that is necessarily shaped by the unforgiving science of flight. Despite these constraints, it has been Rutan’s self-imposed principles that give him the freedom, experience, and courage necessary to excel in his craft. Encoded into the shape of Rutan’s aircraft are a series of convictions, and a clear point of view emerges when you consider his body of work not as isolated designs, but as a connected ecosystem. This talk will discuss these self-referential connections, and how they can inform the way we think about our own design experience.

Groupthink is a term first used in 1972 by social psychologist Irving L. Janis that refers to a psychological phenomenon in which people strive for consensus within a group. In many cases, people will set aside their own personal beliefs or adopt the opinion of the rest of the group.People who are opposed to the decisions or overriding opinion of the group as a whole frequently remain quiet, preferring to keep the peace rather than disrupt the uniformity of the crowd. Groupthink can have some benefits like When working with a large number of people, it often allows the group to make decisions, complete tasks, and finish projects quickly and efficiently. However, this phenomenon also has costs as well. The suppression of individual opinions and creative thought can lead to poor decision-making and inefficient problem-solving.

This presentation was originally delivered to the SoCal UX Camp; it's designed to help "creatives" to get over their numbers-phobia, and instead start engaging with analytics.

Event: SoCal UX Camp 2016 Presented by: David LaFontaine This is a hands-on exploration on how to move beyond the basics with Google Analytics. Why should designers have to deal with all these confusing spreadsheets, numbers, charts and graphs? Well, without at least a decent grasp of how to read web analytics, creative professionals are going to continue to lose control of their creations, because to decision-makers, the charts and graphs and spreadsheets seem to be the very essence of unassailable logic. Worse, designers will lose out on the opportunity to make what their sites better, by gaining insights into the needs, desires and motivations of their users. Too many digital experiences are being carefully crafted by UX Designers to "surprise and delight" users -- only to lose that human essence at the end, when final decisions are made, based solely upon surface-level analysis of audience behavior. It need not be so. In fact, we desperately need to start putting the "human touch" back into what we create. Because the alternative is just so much over-processed brainmush. Slideshows, listicles and clickbait are not what we were put on this earth to create nor consume.

Amplification is about catching bigger waves What blogs do you read? Most corporate blogs are • Boring • Bland • Safe What kind of blogs do you read? • Opinionated • Surprising • Have a point of view • Teach you something What is Content Marketing? How important is content marketing? Content wins for most effective strategy; but it’s also the hardest to implement Amplification = content x channel What is Amplification? Example: Catching the wave in 2013 Original post: 2011 What is Amplification? Section Two: Research Start with People People first The first question you need to ask is: “who do I want to reach?” Section Two Every good product, website, campaign, and piece of writing starts with people in mind. How do you choose your audience? Technique #2: draw a venn diagram Our target audience is: __________________ Finding pain Section Two When you understand your audience’s pain you’ll be able to better define their problem. Example: pjrvs.com Focus on their needs Observe people in their habitat Where do people hang out? Research examples: where would you find managers? What are you looking for? BIG problems trends pain points frustrations Observing trends Yesterday I saw this tweet: He’s tweeting about this site: The Grid He’s not happy about it A lot of other designers don’t like it either I go to Designer News: Where have I seen this before? What’s the trend we’re observing? Designers are feeling threatened. This takes time. Collect and organize your research. Sample research I’m using an app called keeeb.com to track trends. Listen Focus on your audience’s biggest problems Organize your research • Record your findings • Organize them into groupings • Identify a big pain / issue / topic you could focus on You grow an audience by targeting a topic people care about! Section Three: Writing & Promotion 3 Write for your audience Writing viral content is hard. Great, shareable content… Why do people share content? Types of content Amplify your content Which train are you going to hitch your content to? Your own small network Someone else’s big network Effects of amplification Two types of amplifiers: 1 How do you build relationships with influencers? How do you earn the right to on online communities? Add value Hacker News Designer News Product Hunt Target the right networks Coordinate your efforts Example 1: Groovehq Coordinate your launch The game plan A note on Hacker News, Designer News, Product Hunt, Reddit… It typically takes about 20-30 minutes for a story to slip off the "New Submissions" page. That's your window to get enough votes to appear on the front page. The algorithm on News Sites favours new content Can you game the system? Timing is important

In our research paper titled "Qualitative Analysis on Tax Evasion and Reasons for Reluctance to Join ATL in Pakistan," we delve into the intricate dynamics of tax compliance and explore the underlying reasons why individuals in Pakistan might hesitate to become a part of the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) within the framework of business law and taxation. With a multidisciplinary approach, our team of five researchers embarked on an in-depth exploration of tax evasion behaviors and the factors influencing them. Through qualitative analysis, we aimed to unravel the complex interplay of socio-economic, cultural, and institutional factors shaping tax compliance attitudes among Pakistani taxpayers. Drawing on a diverse range of qualitative research methods, including interviews, focus groups, and content analysis, we gathered rich insights from a diverse sample of individuals representing various sectors of the economy. By immersing ourselves in the lived experiences and perceptions of taxpayers, tax advisors, and legal experts, we uncovered nuanced perspectives on tax evasion practices and attitudes toward ATL membership. Our findings highlight the multifaceted nature of tax evasion in Pakistan, shedding light on both the motivations driving non-compliance and the barriers to ATL enrollment. From perceived inefficiencies in the tax system to cultural norms and trust deficits in governmental institutions, our research identifies a myriad of factors contributing to tax evasion behavior and reluctance to join ATL. Furthermore, our study offers valuable implications for policymakers, tax authorities, and business stakeholders seeking to enhance tax compliance and foster a culture of transparency and accountability in Pakistan's taxation landscape. By addressing the underlying drivers of tax evasion and promoting the benefits of ATL membership, policymakers can design more effective strategies to broaden the tax base and promote sustainable economic development. In conclusion, our research paper represents a comprehensive endeavor to deepen our understanding of tax compliance dynamics in Pakistan and elucidate the complexities surrounding ATL enrollment. By unraveling the intricacies of tax evasion behaviors and attitudes, we hope to contribute to informed policymaking and foster a culture of tax compliance and integrity in Pakistan's business and taxation environment.
