Yoga Vashishtha of Valmiki is the record of how young Rama, the avatar of Lord Vishnu, attained Self-realization through the teaching of the sage Vashishtha. The book is attributed to sage Valmiki, the same person who wrote the Epic history of Rama, the Ramayana, which events take place after those in Yoga Vashishtha. Yoga Vashishtha comprises of six books. Book I is about Rama’s dissatisfaction with everything the world has to offer. This Book is entitled vairagya, detachment. The emphasis is on the need for the aspirant to keep company with the wise, and to listen and reflect upon their teaching and the meaning of the scriptures. Book II is about the qualities of the aspirant who longs for liberation, enlightenment. It introduces themes that permeate the rest of the book: dispassion, control over one’s desires, company of the wise, study of the scriptures, and self-inquiry. Constantly throughout all of its seven Books (Book VI is in two parts), Yoga Vashishtha emphasizes that detachment or lack of desire is the essential preliminary to spiritual awakening.

Revised (2021) flowcharts and overview. Chapter 18: Moksha-Sanyasa Yoga (The yoga of liberation through the path of knowledge and self-surrender) - 78 verses. It is a review of the truths already presented (18:6). In conclusion, Krishna advises Arjuna to abandon all forms of dharma and simply surrender unto him (18:66). He describes this as the ultimate perfection of life. After listening to the instructions of Sri Krishna, Arjuna is confirmed and gets ready to fight (18:73). After narrating this conversation to Dhritarashtra, Sanjaya regards Krishna with enormous admiration and predicts victory for Arjuna, the supreme archer, for he is surrendered to Krishna, the master of all mystics (18:78).

This is the third in a series of lectures I offered through Yama Yoga Studios, Doha, on Ayurveda. The focus of this lecture was therapeutic approaches to health--this lecture integrated information from the first two to give students a holistic perspective on their health and individual bodies and subtle body constitutions. This is based on thousands of years of study in India and is a very powerful approach to health.

Hatha Yoga is the perfect tool to help man evolve efficiently out of his animal tendencies into human qualities and then, to obtain transcendence into Divine realms of being. Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri taught his students the concept of “Four-Fold Awareness”. One must, he said, first become aware of the body. The Second Awareness is awareness of emotions, senses and energy. The Third Awareness is awareness of mind. And the Fourth Awareness is of awareness itself”. Good Hatha Yoga fosters deep awareness of the body inside-outside, right-side, left-side, to side, bottom side. The practices stimulate deep consciousness in every cell. This awareness “spills over” into an awareness of emotions, sensations, and energy, (prana flows). The awareness deepens into an awareness of the working of the mind, and how body, emotions, sensations and Prana are inseparably linked together. This deepening of consciousness enables the practitioner to direct the course of his own life activities, rather than be a victim of haphazard Karmic forces. Consciousness is the key to control and Hatha Yoga fosters consciousness. * This article appeared in the Integral Yoga Magazine USA. Summer 2010. pg 8-11.

According to ancient Hindu wisdom, our visible Body is not at all our real Self. We have an invisible Inner Body which is the real 'Us' living inside the outer, visible Body and is the seat of all our experiences and learning in our past, present and still-to-come births.

Contents:- 1.Introduction 2.Types of Pancha kosha Theory. 3.Characteristics of Pancha Kosha Theory. 4.Classification of Pancha Kosha Theory. 5.States of Pancha Kosha Theory. (i) introduction:- Pancha kosha theory can be called the model of human being or the conceptualization of the human being, i.e., analysis of 5 layers. It teaches us about the mechanism of the body, mind, and spirit, from the gross elements that make up the physical body to the more subtle aspects of the mind and consciousness. “अन्नं प्राणो मनो बुद्धिर्– आनन्दश्चेति पञ्च ते । कोशास्तैरावृत्तः स्वात्मा, विस्मृत्या संसृतिं व्रजेत्” (ii) Types of Pancha kosha theory:- Annamaya kosha. Pranamaya kosha. Manomaya kosha. Vijnamaya kosha. Anandmaya kosha. (a) Annamaya kosha:- It consists of 5 elements which is known as Panch Mahabhutas namely earth, water, fire, wind and space. These five elements join together to form molecules, tissues and organs. These follow null defined lanes of nature and are controlled by nervous (electrical) and hormones (chemical). It is the mechanism to bring about movement and action in every cell. (b) Pranamaya kosha:- Prana, the vital energy is described here, it is not the material of electromagnetic energy spectrum known to modern sciences. This Prana is the basic fabric of this universe both inside and out side our body. A uniform harmonious flow of prana to each cell of the Annamaya kosha keep them alive and healthy. There are five dimensions of Prana ( Apana, Prana, Udana, Samana, Vyana). Apana:- The downward force called Apana which is responsible for urination. Prana:- It is responsible for breathing movements. Udana:- It is the upward force of the body which is responsible for upward activity like vomiting. Samana:- It is responsible for proper digestion and balancing. Vyana:- It is responsible for all activities in the periphery like nerve impulses, blood circulation and cellular activities. (c) Manomaya kosha:- It is the aspect of ones personality where the mind carries on its different functions such as memory, perception and ego (Manah, Chittah, Ahamkara). Manah - is the active part that receives sensation/impressions gathered by the five senses of cognitions/ jnanendriyas (ज्ञानेंद्रिय). Chittah- the things perceived through the five senses of cognition are stored in the chittah/memory as impressions. Hence chittah is the storehouse of karma and samskaras (impressions). Ahamkara- is a sense of 'I' ness or the faculty of identity. It claims these impressions as its own and stores them as personal knowledge or identification of ourselves with the outer world, which comes with identifying ourselves with the body – Dehatma Bhava (देहात्मा भाव)(we think we are the body). (d) Vijnamaya Kosha:- It is the 4th layer of our reality which is development in human race greatly that differentiate man from animals. We all have two minds. e.g., when the manomaya kosha said, ' It is a beautiful rose, I want to have it,' you started instructing your hand.

With Chapter 7 we enter the second triad of Geeta describing "That" in the Mahavakya "That Thou Art". Here the Lord starts describing the "Goal of the Spiritual Science" the Supreme Self. In the beginning, Sri Krishna promises Arjuna that He would explain the entire science of Spirituality, both theoretical & practical aspects, to clear all his doubts. Then He proceeds to explain the two Prakrities, Para & Apara, of the Self. He describes the 8-fold lower Prakriti, the Apara, consisting of the 5 elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Space, & mind, intellect & ego. Beyond all these is the Lords Para Prakriti, the Spark of Life, Pure Consciousness, which supports all life in the universe. The two aspects of the Self, as Purusha & Prakriti create the whole 'Jagat'- the world-of-change. The One Self forms the core of all life, & everything is hung on It as pearls in a neckless. Then the Lord describes Himself as the Dharma-the Law-of-Being of everything. All matter exist in the Spirit, but the Spirit is not in Matter. Matter is just Super-imposed on Spirit, to be alive. Maya with its 'Veiling" & 'Projecting' action prevents all from recognizing the Self within them.

The "Yoga of the Imperishable Brahman" should be understood here as the "Way to Imperishable Brahman". After answering the questions raised by Arjuna, the Lord explains how those who can remember the Infinite at the time of their departure from the body will reach the Infinite. So He advises Arjuna to remember the Infinite always & face his life diligently. Here, Krishna explains splendidly the nature of the Infinite upon which the seeker is to fix his single-pointed mind. Then He explains the Path-of-Light & the Path-of-Darkness, the former leading to the Imperishable & the latter necessitating the return to the world. Here the technique of "Practical Vedanta" has been completely & fully explained. Krishna's explanations here make us clearly understand that the Self is the Reality upon which all actions, the instruments of action, & the world-of-perceptions are superimposed, & so, by knowing the Self everything is known.
