It’s All About Balance
• How many hours a day do you spend online?
     • The average teen spends approx. 7 hours each day!!!
• What kids of activities do you do…
     • at home?
     • At school?
     • elsewhere?
• What are some of the consequences
of spending too much time plugged
  in?
Intro to Ergonomics
• Break up into 5 groups – each with a different area of expertise
               1. Keyboard
               2. Monitor
               3. Mouse
               4. Chair
               5. Documents
               6. Phone
               7. Desk
• Each group will go to healthycomputing.org
• Click on Office Ergonomics > Ergonomic Setup Tips
• Make notes on the graphic organizer about your area of expertise
• Be prepared to present some Tips to the rest of your class
Negative Health Effects
• Break up into 12 groups – each with a different area of expertise
     1. Head 7. Hands/Fingers
     2. Eyes 8. Lower Back/Lumbar
     3. Neck 9. Upper Back
     4. Shoulders/Arms 10. Hips/Legs
     5. Elbows 11. Knees
     6. Wrists/Forearms 12. Feet/Ankles

• Each group will go to healthycomputing.com
• Click on Your Health>Causes of Discomfort
• Make notes on the graphic organizer about
  your area of expertise
• Be prepared to present some medical
  conditions and causes
So let’s Fix it!

• Stand up!
• Spread out!
• We are going to learn some stretches to
relax & strengthen our muscles and
  improve circulation!
When performing these stretches, make sure to go by the
feel of the stretch - this is far more important than how far
you stretch (or even how far others stretch). If you
experience any discomfort while doing these stretches,
                       discontinue them immediately.
Your Student Workbook

• In your workbook is a School & Home
  Office Ergonomic Survey
• Your home office might just be a desk
where you do homework, or the kitchen
  table, that’s OK!
• Please complete the survey and the
assignment at the bottom to complete this
  station.

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Math extension – have students collect data about their technology use over one week. This data can be collected as a class and students can create graphs and do data analysis on it as part of their data management unit.
  2. For additional notes and diagrams to use with your students download a PDF from http://www.worksafenb.ca/docs/OFFICEEdist.pdf
  3. Teachers – view the stretches at http://healthycomputing.com/health/stretches/index.html and lead your class in a series of stretches they can do to loosen up when using technology for an extended length of time. When performing these stretches, make sure to go by the feel of the stretch - this is far more important than how far you stretch (or even how far others stretch). If you are currently experiencing pain, you must consult with your physician before doing any of these stretches, and if you experience any discomfort while doing these stretches, discontinue them immediately.
