Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) will come into force on July 1, 2014. The new law will generally prohibit the sending of commercial electronic messages without the recipient's consent (permission), including messages to email addresses, social networking accounts and text messages sent to a cell phone. Fines for violations can be as high as $10,000,000.
Join us for 29 minutes as Martha Healey (Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP) and Andy Church (VP Marketing and CRM Practice Management, OnPath) discuss how to be compliant and the best practices for managing prospect and customer data. You’ll learn:
• How to be compliant with CASL.
• The penalties and enforcement for violations.
• How to manage different opt-out and do-not-call lists.
• The difference between implied versus explicit consent.
• How to best capture, update and nurture new prospects and customer records.
Unsolicited commercial electronic messages "spam" represents over 80% of all email traffic. It’s an economic drain on businesses and negatively impacts personal productivity. CASL was tabled as Bill C-28 on May 25, 2010 and was granted Royal Assent on December 15, 2010. The legislation is intended to deter spam and other damaging and deceptive electronic threats such as identity theft, phishing and spyware from occurring in Canada. With the passage of CASL, Canada will become a leader in anti-spam legislation.
