3. INTRODUCTION
“Eternity was born in the village…” a beloved Romanian writer
says in one of his poems. (Lucian Blaga)
And I think he is right. Why? Once you arrive in a Romanian
village – located either at low altitude, seaside or in the mountains,
you will surely feel that time has stopped. Romania has various
villages – richer or poorer, beautiful or boring, well-groomed or left
in ruins. But charming…absolutely delightful!
4. LOCATION AND BRIEF HISTORY
Ciocănești is a commune located in Suceava County, Romania. It is composed of two
villages, Botoș and Ciocănești.
Ciocănești village is 20 km away from the tourist resort Vatra Dornei and has an area
of 6372 ha and a number of 1020 inhabitants . The village is documented since 1400.
Ciocănești was the first inhabited settlement occurred in the path of the founders of
Moldavia.
The people of the village are bound to respect peasant architecture and today there are
over 600 houses in Ciocănești that have turned into patrimony houses.
In 2014, Ciocănești village was named the winner of the first edition of the cultural
and tourist program "Cultural Village of Romania".
5. Locals maintain the tradition of decorating the outside of houses with traditional
designs, as they learned from parents and grandparents. Even the Post Office, the Town Hall or
the shop buildings keep this habit.
The patterns from the painted eggs are kept from generation to generation, they are very
old patterns and each has a meaning. So, rhombus is a symbol of wisdom, the square is the
symbol of intelligence, circles symbolize infinity and eternity, the net or the sieve is separating
right from wrong, the human wisdom used to choose between right and wrong.
TRADITION OF DECORATING

8. CONCLUSIONS
Ciocănești is a place where everything is painted : house, fence,
fountain or even footbridge. This proves once more that the our
popular traditions and customs are more vivid like never before in
this place removed from the Moldavia.
