Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. The game plays in a flat state but the world is actually 3d
Traveling around the maps is much different with the ability to rotate the map
Just looking in a flat sense, the maps have a strong component of verticality and are very tall
From the top left picture, you cannot see the door in the bottom right picture
There is both the challenge of spotting the cubes and actually getting to the cubes
The levels are not connected in a linear fashion, but rather, they are branching off of each other into smaller groups of levels
While Antichamber is not 2D, it does have similar underlying gameplay elements
The player can choose where to go and what to do at any point in the game
