Since 1980, the Bureau has hosted the Meeting of the Heads of National Statistical Offices of East Asian Countries mostly in Japan at intervals of two or three years. This meeting aims to facilitate the exchange of information and views, to improve official statistics and statistical administration in this region. (The member countries are Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan.) The most recent meeting (the tenth) was held in Kyoto in November 2003, and was attended by representatives from 15 countries as well as five international organizations. The theme of the meeting was "Major Current Issues that NSOs are Facing and the Approaches to Cope with Them". This was broken down into the following sub-themes for more focused discussions. i) How to respond to emerging data needs in the light of limited resources ii) How to strengthen the statistical cooperation among the countries in the region.
Cooperation with the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific The Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) was established in Japan in 1970 as an international organization to provide training in statistics to officials from ESCAP countries. Based on an agreement between the Japanese Government and the UN, the MPHPT (Statistical Standards Department) supports SIAP training programs by providing facilities and staff. It acts as the host country's cooperating agency In 2002 fiscal year, Japan provided cash and in kind contribution to SIAP as follows. Cash contribution : 1,752,700 US In kind contribution : 1,680,700 US. In additions, Japan has been providing funds to OECD statistical cooperation program in nonmember countries in Asian region. In 2001 fiscal year, Japan provided 400,000 Fr for OECD program of composite leading indicators. Japan provided 60,000 euro in response to the request from OECD for its program of early warning systems in 2002, 2003.
