4. In this unit of work we explore
the cinematic style and genre
that Vincent (1982) references.
In Burton’s Vincent (1982), we can
identify art/cinema styles and genres
such as Symbolism, German
Expressionist Cinema and
Expressionist Art.

6. Outline of Assessment
Task
Answer all sub-questions and the BIG question about the film Vincent
(1982).
Purpose of Task
The purpose of this task is to strengthen students ability to respond
critically to text. Each student must show interpretation of the film’s
meaning and support interpretations with rich examples from the text.
These examples should include freeze-frames, audio tracks and/or
motion-sequences.
Presenting your work:
Each student is to present their responses to THE BIG QUESTION and
sub-questions, in the form of a documentary (a multimodal text).
7. The BIG question:
Why does Burton use German-
expressionist-film-elements to give
deeper meaning in Vincent?
This question should be answered at the conclusion of your documentary.
It is a way of bringing all your responses to the sub-questions together.

9. Presenting your analysis:
1. Select at least 3 freeze-frame frames to focus your
analysis on for questions 1 – 5(lighting and framing
analysis).
2. For all other questions, you should focus your
response on the film overall. You may use responses
for questions 6- 10 as general commentary to run
over motion footage in your documentary.
3. You should present a detailed response to the BIG
question at the end of your documentary.
