1. Holden Ltd- History and journey over the years
GM Holden Ltd is the official automobile partner of General Motors, the multinational holding company
known for designing, manufacturing, as well as distributing automobiles all around the globe through its
11 subsidiaries. Established in 1852, Holden Ltd was primarily set up as a saddle manufacturer by a
English immigrant, James Alexander Holden. Then the company as set up in Adelaide, it was called J. A.
Holden & Co.
During 1885, the team was added with the expertise of Henry Frederick Frost, who joined the company
as a junior partner. After Frost’s arrival, the company name changed to Holden and Frost Ltd. The
second generation Holden joined the company with an inclination towards automobiles. James Holden’s
grandson, Edwards Holden joined the company with the same interest during 1908. This is where the
unofficial journey of Holden began in the automotive industry in Australia.
In the beginning, Holden and Frost shifted only to minor repairs and car upholstery. However, it was
only after 1917, during wartime trade restrictions, the company started with full-scale production of
vehicle body shells. In 1919, a new company was formed which was called Holden’s Motor Body Builders
Ltd. During 1923, the company went on to become the first to assemble car bodies for Ford Australia,
until the time their Geelong manufacturing plant finished construction.
It was from 1924, Holden started to exclusively supply car bodies for GM in Australia. However, during
the Great Depression period, like many others, Holden too faced significant slump in productivity and
profit, after which, General Motors purchased and merged the firm with GM Australia, which is now
called GM Holden Ltd. Holden Special Vehicle is a special addition to Holden automobiles established to
enhance performance of vehicles manufactured under Holden.
