Proverbs 6 1-2 My son, if thou be surety (security)
for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a
stranger, Thou art snared with the words of thy
mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
Someone may ask you to cosign for them to be able
to borrow money, buy a car, buy anything on credit.
Don’t.
4. 4
3 Do this now, my son, and
deliver thyself, when thou art
come into the hand of thy
friend; go, humble thyself, and
make sure thy friend. 4 Give not
sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber
to thine eyelids. 5 Deliver
thyself as a roe from the hand of
the hunter, and as a bird from
the hand of the fowler.
5. 5
If you lend to or be security for a
friend, you are likely to lose that friend.
If and when he is unable to pay,
you will have to pay it for him.
Then he will be embarrassed to see you.
When you cosign a note, that is your written
promise to pay if he doesn’t.
Proverbs 22 7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the
borrower is servant to the lender.
6. 6
If you are unable to pay, you will have cheated
the lender and ruined your own credit.
If you have the extra money and are willing to pay
for him, then it would be acceptable to sign.
But consider it a gift from the time you sign.
Luke 6 32 For if ye love them which love you, what
thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love
them. 33 And if ye do good to them which do good
to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do
even the same.
7. 7
34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to
receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend
to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love ye
your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for
nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and
ye shall be the children of the Highest: for He is
kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36 Be ye
therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
This is speaking to the lender, not to the borrower.
The borrower is taught to pay what he owes.
8. 8
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard;
consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no
guide, overseer, or ruler, 8
Provideth her meat in the
summer, and gathereth her food in
the harvest. That is in contrast to the ant who is always
industrious and looking ahead to future need.
A sluggard is
lazy and
irresponsible.
Ants store food in the summer and
fall to eat in the winter.
9. 9
God expects His children to work wisely and
well, and also to look ahead to future needs.
In our culture, we are generally paid for our
work with money.
The principle is the same: save some of what
we earn for future needs.
If we get paid weekly, we will have to save
some each week to pay a monthly light bill.
Or rent, or house payment, or water bill.
If we get paid monthly, we must not spend it all
when we get it; save for expenses later on.
11. 11
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt
thou arise out of thy sleep? 10 Yet a little sleep, a
little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that
traveleth, and thy want as an armed man.
God honors and rewards productivity.
Not just work, but productive work.
A job that makes some money.
Actually making repairs around the house.
Cooking, cleaning, caring for children.
12. 12
Too much sleep will ruin your life.
Everyone needs enough sleep to feel
well and to think straight.
But nobody who isn’t sick needs 14 hours a day.
13. 13
Get up and get busy.
Be productive all day.
When evening comes, you can rest with a
good conscience.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt
thou arise out of thy sleep? 10 Yet a little sleep, a
little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that
traveleth, and thy want as an armed man.
