DIGITIZATION IN EDUCATION
AND BEYOND
Digitization
Compared to 25% of digitization across all
industries only 5% of the education market
is currently digital. [Source: McKinsey
Global Institute]-2018
“Digitization is the process of converting information
into a digital (i.e. computer-readable) format, in
which the information is organized into bits”
+ Integrating digital technologies and devices into the education system, making them go
hand in hand with the curriculum, the teaching process and the overall schooling system.
+ Teaching Learning Tools enables distance education, making classes interactive etc.
+ MIS and Automation tools includes the optimization of administrative tasks to run
digitally or virtually - this includes handling fees, communication between the school and
the guardian, staff and student management and similar things that don’t pertain directly
to the teaching learning process.
+ In a nutshell, digitization in education is a combination of Learning Management and
School Management.

Frontiers
+ Higher educational engagement outside classes
+ Enables distance education
+ Is economic, once the infrastructure is in place.
+ Enables process automation
+ Reduces paperwork
+ Better & efficient interaction & communication
+ Informed (Data - Driven) Decision Making
Advantages
Current Scenario
“Although digitization has not realized its full potential
everywhere yet, many attempts have been made at augmenting
the learning process with technology, and many of these attempts
have also been widely successful.”
Depends on countries and regions.
+ Blended Learning
+ In the EU, Digital Competency is included as a separate, specialised subject.
+ Schools follow a municipal ICT plan or digital strategy.
+ Schools create skills paths to support teachers’ and students’ ICT skills.
+ Online learning materials, digital learning environments and mobile applications are
widely used.
+ Schools use common online environments to connect teachers and students - they share
tasks and information through the online environment, functioning a lot like social
networks.
Developed Nations
+ MoE has ICT in Education Master Plan and piloted ‘One child one laptop’ policy.
+ Open Learning Exchange Nepal, started many initiatives to ensure wide availability of
interactive, curriculum based content digitally, and also help schools set up school wide
digital networks in remote places of Nepal.
+ MIS, LMS and other softwares are being adapted.
+ Schools create skills paths to support teachers’ and students’ ICT skills.
+ Interactive digital content has been created by the government and startups.
+ The dream of an ideal digital classroom, where there is prominent use of online materials
to teach, and blended education is still a long way.
+ The COVID scenario has accelerated adaptation.
Nepal
+ Infrastructure
+ Mindset (awareness and change)
+ Lack of Digital Skills(in teachers, staff and students)
+ Lack of planning and budget (initial investment)
+ Lack of understanding of pedagogy
+ Focus on digital rather than blended learning
+ Not integrated with the curriculum
+ Lack of trust-worthy and localized software
+ Low quality of courseware
Challenges
+ Proper planning, budget allocation and infrastructural development
+ Transparency and communication among all stakeholders
+ Digital literacy and training, for students and educators
+ First, School Management Systems to optimize administrative tasks and introduce digital
technology to the educational process seamlessly.
+ Then, Learning Management with distance learning methods being implemented rapidly
as educational content is made digitally available, and changes in the curriculum to aid
the digital presence in teaching and learning methods.
+ Proper planning for mitigating health and security risks.
+ Analysis and modifications depending on the positive and negative impacts.
Digitization Strategy
+ Blended Learning
+ Learning methodologies (pre-learning, learning, post-learning)
+ Resources for those who need them most.
+ High standards and supports for special needs.
+ Qualified teachers.
+ Evaluation of education.
+ Focus on career development path
+ Open book exams (focus on learning then roteing)
Not a Holy Grail
+ Show your face, give time to settle and take breaks
+ Test out slides
+ Discuss instead of teach (focus on pre-learning)
+ Test understanding with quizzes (post learning),
+ Use existing resources and share open resources
+ Interactive activities, participation & fun-factor
+ Give specific instructions
+ Communicate with students and parents.
+ Analyze performance based on assignments and open book exams
Tips for Online Teaching
+ Create best possible space, seperate space for learning
+ Rely on routines and system to stay organized
+ Limit screen time.
+ Continue learning at home (guide them)
+ Communicate more and openly, learn why if they are struggling.
+ Stay Positive, children look to their parents to figure out how to react to new or
intimidating situations.
+ Assists more than regular times.
+ Give time to adapt.
Tips for Parents
Software
Use of multiple siloed software creates inconveniences, confusion and lack of transparency
among staff and students.
Enormous amount of cost and HR involved to facilitate communication between school
administration, faculty members, students and parents.
Relying heavily on paperwork for information storage.
International software doesn’t meet the local needs, are expensive and require experts to
operate.
Parents are vital stakeholders in education, there are no product that focuses on parents.
In South Asia, most people do not own computers.
Lack of solution to educate online during COVID or similar crisis.
