Join this discussion on the benefits and process of harvesting to aggregators such as DPLA, Europeana and other aggregators. Through case studies we'll outline three stages of the process, including 1) mapping, migrating, and normalizing data in open source digital repositories, 2) making use of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI - PMH), and 3) reaping the benefits of increased exposure. Presenters welcome lively discussion and questions from participants of all technical backgrounds and skill levels.

There is a high demand for companies to publish and promote their content on the web. To accommodate this demand Alfresco has provided a number of solutions covering editorial to web tier. As an example of this demand Ixxus was commissioned by a leading business information publisher to produce a microsite for ‘teaser’ content to increase subscriptions of their main site. To deliver this Ixxus utilized a number of features provided by Alfresco, such as services like the Transfer Service, the web scripts framework, and Surf. The majority of these features now make up the mainstay of Alfresco’s Web Quick Start WCM solution. The goal of this session is to demonstrate a real world example of how the combination of Alfresco, Surf and CMIS offers a great platform for developers to produce content-rich websites quickly. WCM-7 Surfing with CMIS

In all organizations there are highly specialized tools used to produce and organize documents but integrating these with your content management platform can not only be difficult but, at times, even knowing where to start can be a great challenge. In an authoring environment integrating with these tools can make or break your CMS platform. Alfresco already includes many open source projects that help with integration; utilizing these, external tools can communicate both into and out of Alfresco to streamline authoring and publication of content. The talk will go over: Problems of authoring content outside of CMS; Highlighting common authoring tools and external systems; Demonstrating integrations to Microsoft Word, Adobe Drive, Adobe InDesign server, XML database (eXist/ MarkLogic); and Overview of integration methods with benefits and drawbacks. The talk will mainly be a presentation with some brief breakouts to run through pseudo code and show examples.

CUST-6 Integrating Alfresco with Publishing Tools

Many global organizations face similar challenges around sharing information in a timely fashion between regions; for publishers this is often exacerbated due to the size of some their assets such as print quality images or video. Alfresco, with its open extensible architecture, makes a great basis for a global enterprise content or digital asset management system yet there are still numerous challenges to tackle when implementing on a global scale. Federation is one approach that can be used successfully when the regions are generally independent in the production of content, but are producing assets that can be consumed and re-used globally. Alfresco 4.0 uses Solr and that can be leveraged to provide federated search across multiple, disparate Alfresco repositories. This session will cover how: Federated search provided remote content discovery; Share was customized to handle federated search; Intelligent storage provided eventual consistency of files; and Users could request content migration on-demand.

Grails is revolutionizing web development in many corporate Java environments. However, leveraging managed content isn’t straight forward with the myriad of incompatible ECM systems prevalent in businesses. The Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) standard allows for products or applications to be built independently of the underlying content repository. CMIS and Grails is a powerful combination for handling document management activities and displaying web content assets within custom web applications. This session will explore: How to integrate a CMIS repository with Grails applications, Apache Chemistry OpenCMIS vs. roll your own, Authentication models, Practical considerations, Alfresco extensions to CMIS and OpenCMIS. The concepts will be presented before diving into a hands-on session with Grails.

Removing Barriers to Data Sharing: the Research Data Alliance

Infrastructure is often thought of as a complex physical construct usually designed to transport information or things (e.g. electricity, water, cars, money, sound, data…). The Research Data Alliance (RDA) takes a more holistic view and considers infrastructure as a complex body of relationships between people, machines, and organisations. This paper will describe how this more ecological perspective leads RDA to define and govern an agile virtual organization. We seek to harness the power of the volunteer, through an open problem solving approach that focusses on the problems of our individual members and their organisations. We focus on implementing solutions that make data sharing work better without defining a priori what is necessary. We do not judge the fitness of a solution, per se, but instead assess how broadly the solution is adopted, recognizing that adoption is often the social challenge of technical problem. We seek to encourage a bottoms up approach with light guidance on principles from the top. The goal is to develop community solutions that solve real problems today yet are adaptive to changing technologies and needs.

Openness is the becoming more crucial feature of science. Science is to be open because of healthiness of science itself and its public relationship. Openness in science is not only papers but also data now. Scholarly communication should adapt to the openness of papers and data in science. It is a long experience for openness of papers, i.e., open access of papers, but openness of data is relatively new and more challenging since data is diverse in contents and quantity and manifold in use. One of the key technology for sharing papers and data is identifier. Identifiers can remove ambiguity of digital objects and their attributions, realize smarter use of data, and make more linkages to other information. DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is the most successful identifiers in this area, which is now extending their target to data. Japan Link Center (JaLC) now starts the experimental use of DOI for data. The other identifier to be noted is ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier), which is designed and used for identifying researchers worldwide. Embeding these idenfiers in metadata can make more suitable scholarly commucation to openness of science.

However, Data Curation can be heavily centralised and labour intensive, where the cost and effort can become prohibitively high. The concentration of data management and stewardship onto a few highly skilled individuals, like developers and data experts, can be a significant bottleneck. This talk explores how to effectively involving a wider community of users within big data management activities. The bottom-up approach of involving crowds in the creation and management of data has been demonstrated by projects like Freebase, Wikipedia, and DBpedia.
