2. Uber Technologies Inc.
• Transportation/delivery company
• Founded March of 2009
• Based Out of San Francisco, California
• Currently available in 633 cities worldwide
3. But what does Uber actually do??
• The Uber App allows users to request a cab like transportation
service all from the convenience of their smartphone
• Uber’s sister company UberEATS is an online meal ordering service
that allows users to place orders from partner restaurants
4. What market has Uber impacted??
The increase use of Uber has negatively affected the taxi industry. For
instance recently in early 2017, a taxi medallion sold for $241,000 in
New York compared to the $1.3 million they sold for in 2013
5. Is Uber a disruptive technology?
Uber is cheaper in all five major cities list in the graph above.
A growing number of people are using Uber, in these cities and
its playing a negative affect on the local taxi services
6. Is Uber a disruptive technology?
• Yes, Uber is causing disastrous effect on local taxi industries across
the United States
• Yellow Cab, largest taxi company in San Francisco, filed for
bankruptcy protection in fear of financial woes cause by the
competition caused by Uber.
• Uber is competing with taxi companies prices and winning in
major cities (see next slide)
7. My belief of Uber as a disruptive technology
• I believe Uber would be considered as a disruptive innovation
against modern taxi/cab companies.
• This day and age people are so tied in with technology and
convenience, Uber is a simple click of button on a mobile
application that can be downloaded to most phones. Therefore the
younger generation is more likely to use their service when its
available over a traditional taxi.
9. What is a cellphone
• Wireless device that has at least the same functions of a standard
wired telephone but is smaller and more mobile
• First cell phone weighed in at 4.4 pounds and had basic functions
of a keypad
• Todays cellphones vary much from back then but all have more
functions and are very much smaller lighter
11. The man behind it all
Martin “Marty” Cooper invented the first cellular mobile
phone in 1973 while working for Motorola, Inc
12. Martin Cooper
• Born December 26,1928
• Korean War Vet (US Navy Reserve)
• Earned master degree in 1957 and was awarded an honorary
doctorate in 2004
• Worked at Motorola for 29 years
13. How were cellphones disruptive?
• Cellphones over took the market after they came and eventually
controlled the market. The previous devices, land lines and bag
phones, once filled automobiles and homes across the nation, but
the first Motorola cellphone began to open peoples eyes because
you could now have the potential to communicate without the
need for a huge bag or cords.
14. Controlling the market
• Bag Phones cant be used as of February of 2008 because the AMPS
and TDMA networks that they ran off of are now extinct because of
the modern cell phone epidemic.
• As of August of 2015 92% of Americans own cellphones, while only
46% of Americans still have landlines
15. Target markets
• Early cellphones such as the Motorola DynaTAC8000x were target
to commercial industries and wealthy individuals.
• Modern cellphones are targeted at the general public as well as
businesses alike.
• Landlines are target to businesses and homeowners but aren't
targeted to each individual of the home like cellphones
• Bag phones were targeted to users who needed early mobile
communication but no longer have a target since they’re extinct
17. Are cellphone considered a successful disruptive
technology??
• Absolutely, cellphones have caused most other forms of personal
communication to fall off or go out of business.
• Landline owning households have fell 48% (graph:previous slide)
• Automobiles with working bag phones no longer exist
18. Future Innovations?
• The first cellphone which was the initial disruptive innovation
again landlines and bag phones has led to our modern cellphones
and smartphones.
