Asia is surrounded by three oceans - the Atlantic Ocean to the west and north, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and the Indian Ocean to the south. The continent extends approximately 9,700 km from north to south and 6,500 km from east to west. The salinity levels of the oceans surrounding Asia vary, with the Pacific Ocean ranging from 30-36.5 ppt depending on latitude, the Indian Ocean averaging 34.8 ppt, and the Atlantic Ocean from 3.4-3.7% depending on proximity to the tropics or Antarctica.
1. Asia
Water covers 72% of the surface of our planet.
Aquatic resources in the world are mainly open
reservoirs covering the surface of the Earth.
Those are oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and ponds.
2. Asia is surrounded by water belonging to all three Oceans: the Atlantic Ocean in the
north and west, the Pacific Ocean in the east, the Indian Ocean in the south.
Meridional extent of Asia reaches approx. 9700 km, latitudinal - approx. 6500 km.
3. The Pacific Ocean - the highest salinity of the surface waters appears in the
tropics and amounts to 36.5 ‰ in the South, and 35.3 ‰ in the North; in the
equatorial zone it amounts to 34.5 ‰; in high latitudes 33.5 ‰ in the South and
32 ‰ in the North; the lowest salinity - 30-31 ‰ occurs in moderate latitudes
and in inshore basins.
4. The Indian Ocean - the Indian Ocean is very warm, in the
north part the temperature of surface waters rarely
drops below 25 ° C, the salinity is 34.8 per mille.
5. The Atlantic Ocean - the salinity is the 3.7% (the tropics) up to the 3.4%
(surroundings of Antarctica), average salinity of surface waters amounts
to the 3.53%.
