CURRENT STATUS
The Government of Kenya has been
implementing off- grid systems in the country in
order to support the population which is far from
the National Grid.
Among these are the installation of solar Pv to
Institutions so far more than 1,000 done with
2.1MWp at a cost of USD 25 million.
In order to introduce ICT education in primary
schools, over 1600 of them have been fitted with
solar pv.
Doing surveys to estrablish potential villages
where mini-grids can be viable.

3. Solar Hybrid Systems and Mini-grids
Commenced installing solar/wind hybrid systems at off-grid
power stations in towns. Over 33 targetted.
To reduce fuel costs
Solar hybrids at Lodwar (60kW), Hola (60kW), Merti (
10kW), Elwak ( 50kW)
Wind hybrids at Marsabit (500kW)
Solar/Wind hybrid at Habaswein (50kW wind, 30kW solar)
To do more, with funds from GoK, AFD, World Bank,
Nordic Development Fund

4. Policy, Legal and Regulatory
Framework
Renewable energy policy framework comprehensively
provided for in the Energy Policy “Sessional Paper No. 4 of
2004 on Energy”
The “Energy Act No. 12 of 2006” was operationalized from
July in 2007 and provides the legal and regulatory framework
for the energy sector
The energy sector framework has been undergoing review
mainly to align it to provisions and aspirations of a new
constitution (promulgated in August 2010) and Vision 2030.

The Constitution of Kenya 2010 substantially changed the
governance structure of the country by introducing two levels
of governance: National and County
New Energy bill 2014 drafted to incorporate the new
constitutional dispensation.
Energy in general and renewable energy in particular are
expected to play a key role as enablers in achieving the goals
of vision 2030
