Do you know anyone whose life is untouched by government electronic and information systems? In fact, the usability of government systems affects us all — all seven-plus billion of the Earth’s people. Even if we ourselves never visit a government website to claim a National Insurance refund or apply for a provisional driving licence, as tax payers we bear the costs of usability problems in the systems that our governments use to conduct their business. As citizens we suffer the consequences of inadequate effectiveness, efficiency and even satisfaction of government workers due to usability and user experience problems in the systems they use. In the usability of government systems, we are all stakeholders. This presentation covers the intersection of government systems work and UX work. It describes the differences between public-facing government systems and internal ones and explains vital usability and UX needs that each of these must meet. From the other side, it will describe important ways in which government projects differ from private-sector projects and the challenges and rewards that those differences pose for UX work. The talk includes examples from both public-facing and internal systems.

Exciting as the prospect was, she and her peers knew how to be students, but not how to teach. "Bring cookies" to your first and last day of class is basically what she learned in her first and only day of teacher training that first year. And you know what? It works. Since then, Donna has taught countless of courses and workshops at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as continuing education – In this workshop, she shares what she's learned, what works, what doesn't work, as well as general approaches to teaching, teaching designers, and particularly teaching user experience design. How to Teach UX Design

We sense a paradigm shift from technical accessibility towards accessible user experience. We’ve seen the benefits that inclusive design can contribute to product usability and desirability, and we’ve been shown a more inclusive approach to UX by Whitney Quesenbery and Sarah Horton in their book “A Web for Everyone.” But shifting from a conformance approach to accessibility to integrating it holistically into the design process is a logistical, organizational and technical challenge for UX professionals and their colleagues. Hear our Manifesto for Accessible UX, in which we set out an approach to delivering accessible UX in the real world, based on our own many years of experience in the field. Have the opportunity to contribute to developing the Manifesto into something the profession can use to create genuinely inclusive high-quality digital experiences. This workshop is relevant to a wide range of roles, including designers, developers, user researchers, usability specialists, product managers, policy makers, strategists, and leadership. Attendees should come with a commitment to accessibility, a desire to apply a holistic and sustainable approach to accessibility, and a readiness to discuss what's needed to make it so. In other words, this workshop picks up at the "how" and not the "why" of Accessible UX. Attendees will leave the workshop with some immediate actions and resources, so that together we may move Accessible UX forward.

Efforts can be guided by technical standards, but there are shortcomings with treating accessibility for people with disabilities as a compliance effort. What if we take a process-oriented approach to accessibility, focusing on making a commitment and demonstrating progress? I gave this talk at ecomm, Emerging Communications Conference & Awards, 2009 in Amsterdam http://europe.ecomm.ec/2009 Orality, the most natural way for humans to communicate, is inclusive and participatory, highly interactive, and instantaneous. Back in 1982, Walter J. Ong coined the term 'secondary orality' - a way of interpersonal communication made possible by modern communication tools, that is neither classically oral nor literate. This talk will explore if and how digital communication tools are developing into communication enablers, allowing us to go back to our roots and engage in conversations instead of creating written correspondence. We will look at how different tools, such as email and chat, facilitate group communications, and how new tools such as Google Wave support our natural way of interacting with each other.

Valedictory Lecture Making Thinking Visible in Complex Times Prof Simon Buckingham Shum This event took place on 15th July 2014 at 4:00pm (15:00 GMT) Berrill Lecture Theatre, The Open University, Walton Hall Campus, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom In 1968 Doug Engelbart gave “The Mother of All Demos”: a disruptive technology lab had quietly invented the mouse, collaborative on-screen editing, hyperlinks, video conferencing, and much more. This was the start of the paradigm shift, still unfolding: computers were no longer to be low level number crunchers, but might mediate and mould the highest forms of human thinking, both individual and collective. In this talk I review nearly 19 years in KMi chasing this vision with many colleagues, inventing tools for making dialogue, argument and learning processes visible in different ways. How do we harness such tools to tackle, not aggravate, the fundamental challenge facing the educational system, and its graduates: to think broadly and deeply, and to thrive amidst profound uncertainty and complexity? These are the hallmarks of the OU — and indeed, all true education from primary school onwards.
