WISDOM
Barry Kennedy
George Bernard Shaw said, “Men are wise in proportion not to
their experience but to their capacity for experience.” Some one hundred
and eighty-one Hebrew words in the Old Testament and fifty-three Greek
words in the New Testament are translated wisdom in the KJV. Therefore,
this is a subject worthy of everyone’s consideration. That being said, Mr.
Shaw was on target with his quote. Experience can teach one many things
but it cannot teach anyone who refuses to learn. Knowledge, separated
from application, is void of value. If one refuses to put into practice the
knowledge he has gained it could rightly be said that one lacks wisdom.
One may have loads of experience, but if he lacks the “capacity for
experience” he lacks wisdom. Wisdom is an attribute sorely needed today.
Wisdom enables one to use the knowledge that he has gained in the
right way. What have you learned? God’s Word tells us that those who
“know not God and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ...”
will “be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the
Lord, and from the glory of His power” (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9). There is
now a level of knowledge that this author, and everyone reading this
article now has concerning God’s coming vengeance on the ignorant and
unruly, based upon the reading of God’s inspired Word. Wisdom,
however, teaches one what to do with that knowledge. Going out into the
world, armed with this knowledge, looking down upon those who have
never known the Almighty God, and/or those who have never obeyed the
Gospel of Jesus Christ, is not the right way (i.e. wise way) to use this
knowledge. Nor should the Christian, one who knows God and obeys the
gospel of Christ, think of himself as being worth more to the Lord than
those who are lost. No, wisdom says to take this knowledge (i.e. God’s
vengeance is coming) and let it motivate us to strive to help one another
come to the saving knowledge of God’s truth (John 8:32). How are we
using the biblical knowledge we have gained? Do we have wisdom?

Wisdom enables one to see the future of
actions or decisions made in the present.
“A wise old owl sat in an oak;
The more he saw the less he spoke;
The less he spoke the more he heard;
Let’s try to imitate that bird.”
This is a catching little poem, with a valuable
lesson. Through the wisdom of man we cannot
even know God (1 Corinthians 1:21). In the
same verse it says that God chose the
“foolishness of preaching to save them that
believe.” Gospel preaching, in its purest sense,
is considering the knowledge of our past (our
sinful lives Romans 3:23), present (loved by
God John 3:16), and future (God’s willingness
to give us a home in Heaven John 14:1-6).
Wisdom takes this knowledge, assimilates it,
and decides to act in view of eternity. What do
our actions/decisions say about our wisdom?

EMYG News
Hello! I hope you enjoyed Easter and were able to
spend it with your family. Last Saturday, we had a
great turnout for our Spring Hunt! Thank you
everyone for coming out and making Saturday such a
success! We will have our T.G.I.F. beginning at
9:00pm this Friday so please spend your evening with
us. Chaperones welcome and needed for each of these.
The following week we will not have T.G.I.F. because
we will be at Maywood for the 7th week squad
retreat!! I hope you are looking forward to that as
much as I am. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE sign up
on the youth board and get with me on the payment. If
you cannot come because of money, don't let that be a
reason you don't go. Come talk to me and we will
work it out for you to go if you'd still like to go. On
April 25th
, there is a MANDATORY PARENT and
YOUTH meeting FOR ALL AGES. Let's plan on
having a potluck meal after worship that morning, so
please bring something to share. After we eat, we will
begin our meeting. I'm honored to be working with
such fine parents and youth. I pray that as we seek to
work together, that our love for each other will
continue to grow. Cassie and I are grateful to be
working with you to help develop young adults who
truly love the Lord and seek to make their faith their
own. As always, if we can help you in any way, please
let us know. God loves you and so do we. Alex
