  1. 1. 4 Hugh Vol. 43 June 26, 2018 Number 25 “United we Stand” By Barry Kennedy Most likely you have heard the old adage, “United we stand, divided we fall.” According to Wikipedia, this motto has been attributed to Aesop. In 1768 John Dickinson is said to have incorporated this motto into “The Liberty Song.” Others, of notoriety, have also used this profound statement, such as Patrick Henry in his last public speech, given in 1799. “Let us trust God, and our better judgment to set us right hereafter. United we stand, divided we fall. Let us not split into factions which must destroy that union upon which our existence hangs.” 1 Of course, Patrick Henry made reference to this great country and the “Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions.” We should be able to see the need for such an understanding in the Lords church, especially today. However, we do not have to look to the men of renown in this country, all one has to do is read God’s word. Notice what the psalmist David wrote concerning unity. “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life forevermore” (Psalm 133:1-3). Unity is Good and Pleasant. Friendships are usually based upon what people have in common. Think about it, how good and pleasant it is to have a good friend. Having someone to share all our greatest moments, as well as our most difficult ones, is priceless. However, the Bible says, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3). Goodness and pleasantness are impossible without unity. The problem is, many seek union over unity. Unity involves being on the same page. Of course, in matters of opinion one must offer liberty (Romans 14:22), but when it comes to doctrine we must have unity. “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10). Union can describe two of different mindsets agreeing to overlook their differences to “get along.” Sounds good, but it is not in God’s plan for man to compromise (1Corinthians 15:58). Paul wrote to encourage the church at Ephesus to always be “endeavoring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3). Just imagine how it would be if everyone had the unity God commands in religion. 1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ United_we_stand,_divided_we_fall --article continued on page 3-- ELDERS Mike Childers..............397-6453 Dennis Hallmark .........255-5557 Mark Hitt.....................322-0917 Bobby Lindley.............260-9193 DEACONS Wade Bryan.................419-5552 William Harris.............416-8149 Ricky Lindsey .............844-9944 Jeff Mansel..................871-0357 Harold Roby................844-5431 Jimmy Spearman.........840-8957 Michael Wilson ...........891-0891 PREACHER Barry Kennedy ... 2. 2. Community Outreach Item: baby wipes Baby wipes --article continued from page 1— There is only one way that we can obey these commands; we must be honest with ourselves. Life is a gift from God and far too often we take it for granted. The prophet said to Israel long ago, “Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?” (Ezekiel 33:11). He is saying that God does not want man to die lost and that God has given man the way to turn from the wickedness of the world. That being said, we owe it to ourselves to make the turn. If someone said that the bridge ahead was out, and we continued full speed ahead, whose fault would it be if we crashed? We owe it to ourselves to take advantage of God’s warnings. John the revelator delivered the strongest warning against dishonesty when he wrote, “...all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone...” (Rev. 21:8). So the question follows, “Have we been paying that which we owe?” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Summer Outreach Project We need your help to fill 100 backpacks for area schools. Girls’ Joyful Rebellion The girls’ Joyful Rebellion Group will meet this Wed., June 27 at 6:00 p.m. at the building. Jenna Davis will do the devotional. --article continued from page 1— Unity is a Blessing. Blessings are often grouped into the same category as good health, you don’t notice them until they are gone. God’s wisdom is shown in His giving of the word. Each of us have the opportunity to be the recipients of the blessings God offers. However, we must be in Christ in order to access those blessings and we cannot be in Christ without having unity. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:” (Ephesians 1:3). We often fail to see the blessings that unity provides. One of the blessings unity provides is protection. Just as the title of this article says, “united we stand,” but if we (Christians) are divided, we will fall. Fall to the temptations of compromise, denominationalism, even humanism. Unity shows God’s wisdom. We, as members of the Lord’s church, have been blessed with a support system. We are commanded to exhort one another on a daily basis (Hebrews 3:13). The fact is the Christian armor only covers the front (Ephesians 6:14-17). God wants His people to be united in order to stand against the tempter. We must keep in mind the fact that God has made every provision for our salvation from sin and life eternal with Him (John 3:16). Knowing what He has done, why would we not want to be united and stand?
