What Are We Doing Today?
By Barry Kennedy
Everyone has something that he or she can do. Worthlessness is not a label given
to anyone by God (Genesis 1:26). However, we may find ourselves often labeling others,
as well as, ourselves as being worthless. It may be based upon abilities, education, or
something as simple as our looks. Carlene Mattson wrote a very touching story about her
handicapped son Jeff. This is an excerpt from that article.
Several years ago, Jeff played in a special Little League for kids with disabilities.
After many seasons of watching from the bleachers and rooting while his big
brother played ball, Jeff's opportunity finally arrived. When he received his
uniform, he couldn't wait to get home to put it on. When he raced out from his
bedroom, fully suited up, he announced to me, "Mom, now I'm a real boy!"
Though his words pushed my heart to my throat, I assured him he had always
been a "real boy." (April 1993 Focus on the Family p.13.).
Jeff’s concept of a “real boy” was tied closely to what he was able to do. The world may
say that we are not able, but God has not given life to you and me for us to sit back and
feel sorry for ourselves. Nor has He given us the “right” to say that we are worthless (John
3:16). Jeff felt the value of being a part of the team. The mindset that should permeate
each person is that we are given the gift of life and that God loves us and wants us to be
with Him for all eternity (John 14:1-6; 1Timothy 2:4; 2Peter 3:9). If that does not give us a
sense of value nothing will. We all are given this day (Psalm 118:24). What are we doing
TODAY to realize our value to the Lord?
Here are a few tips that can help each of us to achieve this mindset.
• I will not strike back. If someone is rude, if someone is impatient, if
someone is unkind, I will not respond in that way (Romans 12:19).
• I will ask God to bless my enemy. If I come across someone who treats me
harshly or unfairly, I will quietly ask God to bless that individual
(Matthew 5:44). I understand my enemy could be a family member, a
neighbor, a co-worker, or a stranger.
• I will be careful about what I say. I will carefully choose and guard my
words, being certain that I do not spread gossip (James 3:1-6).
• I will go the second mile. I will find ways to help share the burden of
another person (Matthew 5:41).
• I will forgive. I will forgive those who hurt me (Luke 23:34).
• I will secretly do something kind for someone. I will reach out
anonymously and bless the life of another (Ephesians 4:32).

--article continued from page 1—
• I will treat others the way I wish to be
treated. I will practice “the Golden
Rule” (Matthew 7:12). I will do unto
others as I would have them do to me,
with everyone I encounter.
• I will raise the spirits of someone who is
discouraged. My smile, my words, my
expressions of concern and support can
make a difference to someone facing a
challenge (Romans 14:19).
• I will take care of my body. I will eat
less . . . I will eat healthier . . . I will
exercise . . . I will be thankful . . . My
body will be a fitting temple for Him
who dwells in me (1 Corinthians 6:19-
20).
• I will grow spiritually. I will spend more
time in study, prayer, and meditation. I
will retreat from life’s pressures and
distractions and seek to learn God’s will
(2 Peter 3:18). (From House to
House/Heart to Heart)
Each one of us would do well to start every day
reading these simple tips and then make the application.
It has been said, “Today is a gift, that’s why it is called
the present.” Do we really view life as a gift? Not only a
gift, but a gift from God? What we do with our time,
here on this earth, will determine our residence in the
time to come (2 Corinthians 5:10). God has offered the
wonderful gift called life. This gift is both physical (John
10:10) and spiritual (Romans 6:23). Far too often we
focus on the wages of sin and fail to see the gift of
eternal life. It is true, God has offered eternal life, but
that life is based upon what we are doing today
(Matthew 7:21; 1 Corinthians 4:2; Hebrews 11:6).
May God help us all to ask, “What am I doing
today?”
