TAKE YOUR EDUCATION WITH YOU
DERRICK COBLE
As a new school year begins, the anicipation and excitement of learning in
unexplored territories refreshes the mind. There are new textbooks to read, new
concepts and facts to learn, and new people to meet. Yet, none of this would be
possible without the old education. The education that one has received in the past
serves as a solid foundation on which to build year after year. It is kind of like the
idea that, “All I really need to know I learned in Kindergarten.” Without past
education, future education would be impossible—the building blocks would
crumble. Thus, one must take what he has learned from year to year and add upon it.
Education and experience must go with a person his entire life. Nonetheless, amidst
all the textbooks that one may use throughout his life, none can compare with the
education received from one solitary book. That Book (the Bible) is the only book
that can perfectly educate one in subjects like science, history, geography, and even
astronomy. But, the Bible is not just another textbook. It is the Book of all books,
because it contains words that God breathed (2 Tim. 3:16,17) in perfect unity and
accuracy to guide the soul of man into everlasting life (John 6:63,68; Phi. 2:16).
With this in mind, God expects all men to gain wisdom from His Word and to
use that wisdom in faithful obedience so as not to be counted as a fool by the
Almighty. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise
wisdom and instruction” (Prov. 1:7). Again, “The fear of the LORD is the instruction
of wisdom; and before honour is humility” (Prov. 15:33). Therefore, I must be a fool
in the eyes of the world and prefer humility above honor, in order to be wise in the
eyes of God and receive honor above humility (Mat. 23:12). This is why the so called
“educated” and “scholarly” individuals of the present day, and in the days of the early
church, will not and would not receive true wisdom. “Because the foolishness of God
is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your
calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not
many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to
confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound
the things which are mighty” (1 Cor. 1:25-27). God has made the wisdom of the
world foolish (1 Cor. 1:20), because it ends with death. Solomon finally realized,
“of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh”
(Eccl. 12:12). The weariness experienced in worldly education alone ends at the
grave because those books cannot save and cannot last into eternity, “But the word
of the Lord endureth for ever” (1 Pet. 1:25). Thus, God has admonished all men to

study His Word (2 Tim. 2:15), obey It (Rom. 6:17),
pray for wisdom (James 1:5), teach it to others (2 Tim.
2:2), and use it daily (Luke 9:23). Every member of the
Lord’s body must understand that Chrisianity is not just
a doctrine, a title, or just some religion; it is a
lifestyle—the lifestyle of Jesus and the only one that
will save (1 Pet. 2:21; Acts 4:12; 1 Tim. 4:16).
Take your education of godliness with you!
Does the world outside of the church building
know that you are a Christian? If not, some serious
self-examinaion needs to follow (2 Cor. 13:5).
Christians cannot love the world and God (1 John
2:15-17). The requirement is to, “come out from
among them, and be ye separate” (2 Cor. 6:17).
While John was exiled on Patmos, he saw the
sixth seal of a book opened by Jesus standing as a
lamb that had been slain (Rev. 5:6; 6:12-17). When
that seal was opened, it signified that a great day of
wrath would come upon the Roman world.
Knowing this great calamity that would extend
from the outraged Lord, the question was asked,
“Who shall be able to stand?” (Rev. 6:17). The
answer was simply this: those who were sealed as
the servants of God (Rev. 7:1-3). Only those who
could be easily idenitifed as Christians by the life
they led would be able to stand against God’s
wrath. Would you have been able to stand? Will
you be able to stand in judgment (Mat. 7:21-23)?
“From the day we entered the ninth-grade
health class, one blackboard was covered with the
names and locations of the major bones and
muscles of the human body. The diagram stayed
on the board throughout the term, although the
teacher never referred to it. The day of the final
exam, we came to class to find the board wiped
clean. The sole test question was: ‘Name and
locate every major bone and muscle in the human
body.’ The class protested in unison: ‘We never
studied that!’ ‘That’s no excuse,’ said the teacher.
‘The informaion was there for months.’ Ater we
struggled with the test for a while, he collected the
papers and tore them up.”
