The document discusses IPv6 and transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6. Some key points include:
- IPv6 addresses larger address space and other improvements over IPv4 like more efficient routing and built-in security.
- Transition technologies like IPv6 over IPv4 tunneling can help transition from IPv4 to IPv6 networks.
- There are some valid concerns about transitioning like needing larger packet headers but overall the benefits of IPv6 outweigh these issues. Proper hardware support can alleviate performance concerns.

2. Session Objectives And Takeaways
• Session Objective(s):
– Identify the deployment blockers when deploying
IPv6
– Explain how to solve those blockers
– Recommend a staged migration

5. IPv4 Limitations
The limitations of IPv4 are:
• Limited number of addresses
• Routing difficult to manage
• Host configuration is complex
• No built-in security
• Limited quality of service
6. IPv6 Improvements
Improvements in IPv6 include:
• Larger address space
• More efficient routing
• Simpler host configuration
• Built-in security
• Better prioritized delivery support
• Redesigned headers for efficient processing and
extensibility
7. IPv6 Address Space
The IPv6 address space is:
• 128 bits
• Extremely large
• Allows routing flexibility
8. IPv6 Address Syntax
IPv6 addresses are:
• Displayed in hexadecimal
• Can use zero compression
• Use a prefix to define the network portion of the address
rather than a subnet mask
Examples:

A bigger header is necessary due to the 128 bit IPv6
addresses but is not the only factor for network
performance.
Other factors, such as a fixed-size header and negotiable
MTUs help optimize forwarding and provide a better
payload/header ratio.
A bigger problem in reality is that IPv6 is slow because
there’s hardware offload support for IPv4 but not for IPv6
(e.g. in server NICs doing TCP checksum offload). Once
similar offload support is provided for IPv6, there will be no
comparative difference.

Final Word…
“Implementing IPv6 has consumed less than 1 percent
of our IT budget, and the IT budget is only a small
part of the overall corporate budget. These costs are
modest compared to the expected benefits.”
