Advocacy Plan William Allen White Elementary
Communication With Students Make expectations clear-meet with all classes at the beginning of the year to discuss your expectations and make sure rules are clearly posted. Discuss the consequences for not meeting those expectations.  Have a suggestion box in a high traffic area in the library where students can tell you… New Books they would like What activities they would like to do in the library.  Have a rewards program for students to choose from. Know the names and faces of all the student’s who come into your library. Develop relationships with them
Student Communication Cont… Be approachable!  Make sure student’s know when they have materials due, or when they are over due and have a fine. Have student helpers/ volunteers If they have holds let them know when they can be picked up. Visit classrooms to let them know what is going on the in library!  Have materials available in English and Spanish.
Communication with Staff Let teachers know of the library expectations. When students can come to the library Lessons in the library Let them know when materials are ready to be picked up. Be present at all meetings. Co-Teach/ plan lessons with them.  Develop a relationship with the teachers, so they know they can go to you for help/resources ect…
Communication with Staff cont… Share resources and other professional development ideas you have. Let teachers know of new materials that have come in. Know the curriculum at all grade levels.
Make sure the lessons  follow the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) Standards for Library Media and Technology for each grade level so that students will be successful in the following four areas:   Information Literacy   Independent Learning Social Responsibility   Technology Literacy Make sure each lesson you teach with a teacher covers some of these standards.  http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=3511#lmtStd
Communication with Administration Be aware of what  your budget is DON’T go over budget.  Communicate!  Know your libraries circulation statistics. Know who the administration is- get your name out there (in a good way)!
Communication with parents Have a monthly newsletter that tells them what is going on in your library. Keep your libraries website up-to-date.  Provide resources in both English and Spanish. Have resources for homework help.  Get to know the parents. Ask for parent volunteers.  Have the library open for all parent teacher conferences.
Communication with parents cont… Make sure parents are aware of the libraries rules and expectation.  Invite parents to come watch a library lesson.
