Overview of Jamaica Bay
Jamaica Bay is designated for primary contact
and it’s tributaries are designated for secondary
contact
Water quality in Jamaica Bay is better than its
been in 100 years and supports a wide variety of
wildlife but there are still impairments:
Waters tend to be eutrophic
Seasonal low DO levels
These water quality impairments are linked to
high nutrient loadings in conjunction with man-
made physical alterations
DEP is upgrading all for of it’s WWTP that
discharge into Jamaica Bay for Step Feed BNR
Loss of the marsh islands is another critical issue
within Jamaica Bay
DEP has partnered with ACOE to restore many of
these marsh islands ($13M funded)
4. Additional Water Quality Studies
In 1995/96 DEP conducted
comprehensive water quality and
ecological studies to calibrate
JEM
Subsequent comprehensive water
quality, ecological, and finfish
studies were conducted in
2005/2006
Ongoing Jamaica Bay Science &
Resiliency Institute will be
refining JEM
DEP to conduct a comprehensive
Post Construction Monitoring
Plan from 2016 thru 2019

Notes de l'éditeur
Historically, the average depth of Jamaica Bay was much shallower than it is today. The north channel of the bay was dredged (for port considerations), as was Grassy Bay (for fill for JFK airport). Depths in these portions of the bay increased from historical levels of 2-4 ft MLW to as much as 35-45 ft MLW. In addition, the construction of the JFK runway and development of the Broad Channel community has reduced the exchange of waters in Grassy Bay with the rest of the Jamaica Bay system.
DEP’s efforts to control and reduce CSOs began with the construction of the Spring Creek facility in 1974. It is currently undergoing a design upgrade at a cost of $87 million (M).
Construction of the 50 million gallon Paerdegat Basin storage facility was recently begun; total construction costs are $300 M.
The wet weather capacity of the Jamaica Bay WPCP will be expanded by 50 millions gallons per day (MGD) to reduce CSO overflows to Bergen Basin.
Additional sewers will be constructed to reduce CSOs to Thurston Basin.
A facility plan is being developed for Fresh Creek that will include cleaning of the sewers and will likely require a storage facility and an increase of wet weather capacity at the 26th Ward WPCP by 50 MGD.

Dump valve issue in Nov/December 2014. The dump valves of the 4 East Final Tanks are very difficult to operate and are located in a very difficult to access sump in the gallery. There is a contract in place to have all 4 valves replaced.
