This document summarizes research on diamondback terrapin populations in Jamaica Bay over 20 years. Key findings include: 1) Adult female survival has declined at one nesting site since Hurricane Sandy but has remained stable at another site. 2) Over 15% of females exhibited major shell injuries that reduced their survival rate. 3) The populations show high site fidelity but some turtles move between sites temporarily. 4) Ongoing research uses GPS transmitters to track turtle movement patterns in real-time.

5. 2018 was the year for two new regulations giving terrapins more
protections:
● On May 1, 2018 the NYS DEC announced “the closure of the
commercial harvest of terrapins and added the species to the list
of native turtles with no open season”.
● On March 28, 2018 DEC added regulations to “put
forth a requirement for diamondback terrapin
excluder devices on commercial and recreational
crab pots set in near shore harbors, creeks, coves,
rivers and tributaries in New York's Marine and
Coastal Districts”.
