Edwin Emery had several achievements in sports from a young age, including winning book reading contests in primary school, playing on successful football and basketball teams, and being named MVP for his basketball club multiple times in his early teens. He struggled socially in his first year of secondary school but continued playing basketball at high levels. He eventually passed his GCSEs and A-Levels, got into university, and had opportunities to travel abroad playing basketball.
