Moving Towards
      An Integrated
Publishing Platform
What is going
on out there?
Everyone is experimenting.

“
    I made 120 decisions today –
           and all of them wrong!

     - Digital Content Manager, Corina Press
Digital e-Books mean different
     things to different people.
E-book = App
    TouchPress
    Watch video
E-book = PDF Flip
      Mygazines

E-book = Website
   Simon Fraser
Marketers are talking
       “digital
     unicorns.”
Inkling Video
Educators like what they see.

 “We want online resources
     and digital textbooks.”
Students are wired
and online - all the time.

       They want online
      tools for studying.
But schools and Universities
  don’t have the technology
 infrastructure to go digital.
And…students have indicated
      they find digital media
                 distracting.
“ I know how to operate a book
and if the technology option isn't working –
I’m going to go back to what I know and
                 what I'm comfortable with.

Also - there are distractions with online
learning as well that make focusing on
          homework and studying difficult.
There are no “right ways” of
           doing things yet.
And no one has figured it all
                  out…yet.
BUT…
“
The web isn’t dead; it’s not
    going away; it’s pretty
 much the central platform
     of human expression
                     today.
“ When we conduct almost
   every other aspect of our
      lives via the web, what
reason is there to be doing
book publishing away from
 it, [and] only engaging the
       web to do marketing?
Where
do we fit in?

  So…what does
   this mean for
          TEP?
                And where have
                 we come from?
October 2009

•All websites were in HTML

•Difficult to update and make changes

•Reliance on a “web person”

•No security or control over access

•Online support = “after-thought”
2 years later…March 2011

• 10 websites ( 6 in Drupal / 5 in HTML )

•Two authors’ blogs (H&PE / SW)

•Online account registration system

•Online content – Web Explorations –
developed with print resource – not fully an
“after-thought”
March 2011
• All websites housed in a Content
Management System (Drupal)

•Database driven; easy to update, change,
and search for content

•No more reliance on a “web person”

•Access to Google Analytics

•Control over access – teacher-level accounts
HAL

vs.
HAL
The print textbook is not
going away.

But online support is
expected - and expectations
are getting higher.
We are not creating a digital
textbook.

We are NOT a software
company.

But we can integrate digital
into our print resources.
We have the house –
 let’s start building.

…from the beginning.
•Password protected website
•Test Banks
•PowerPoints
•Student Quizzes
•Crossword Puzzles
•Handouts

     Easy and cheap to do…
ITEM TIME COSTS

Website / Web 1 week $1500
  Graphics
 Test Bank 3 weeks $2000

PowerPoints 1 week $1000

  Quizzes 1 day $200

  Handouts n/a FREE

 Crossword 1 day $200

    Total $5000
Integrated?

Maybe
 not…
•Web Explorations
•Social Media
(Blog/Twitter)

More work, but we did it!
ITEM TIME COSTS

  Author Blog On-going Build into
                   Commitment Author
                                contract
Twitter Account On-going Build into
                   Commitment Author
                                contract
Web Explorations Months $12,000 +
Integrated?

Sort
 of…
How do we
become fully
  integrated?
We MUST make a commitment
   to digital content from the
                   beginning.

        And we start with little
                experiments.
What does this look like?
    Some suggestions…
New belief:

        Digital content is just as
      important as print content.

It can no longer be an “after-thought”
and must be given as much consideration
                                  as print.
1. Start with content
2. Define print / digital content
3. Build into book design
 (icons)
Example:

     Why not take
some feature content
 (with expiry) online?

          (you’ve already paid for the
          development of the content)
Example:

    Why not use web savy
teachers and go digital first for
       some content?

                 (with Drupal – you don’t
                         need web skills)
Example:

Why not experiment
with video content?

              (This is expensive –
           start with one a book…)
Example:

    Instead of weblinks –
let’s also include a listing of
    useful apps…and use
           qr codes.
Example:

 Your Example
Your Suggestions
   Your Ideas
Make the commitment
  to develop content for
   the web …from the
      beginning.
And if you do that…

 anything
        is
POSSIBLE!*
