How Important Music in Teaching Science
Music is very important in teaching Science like other subjects.
Music as integral part of our lives. The important events in our lives
will be incomplete without music. A day in school will not complete
without having the children sing. Music is called the universal
language, because even without words all types of music touch
children’s ears, head, heart, and body, and leaves them more alert
for having responded. That is why it is very important in teaching
science. Action is a nonverbal response for children who do not yet
have the language ability. Through music children use body actions
to communicate image on a feeling. Music helps grow children
physically. As children listen and move to music they develop gross
and fine motor skills. Music helps grow children socially. As children
participate in music they learn social skills like teamwork, tolerance
and respect for others. Music helps grow emotionally. As the
children listens to different kinds of music, they use their bodies to
express different kinds of emotions. Like for example, Live music
can evoke feelings of joy and make children want to get up and move
their bodies. Quite and soothing music calms and relaxes children.
Music helps grow creatively. As children listen to music they form
images in their minds. They use their bodies to express or visualize
some images. Music helps grow children cognitively. As the children
engage in music activities, they learn how to solve problems, improve
their reasoning skills, and hone their communication skills. According
to Howard Gardner (1992)”the single most important thing in
education is for each person to find at least one thing that he or she
connects to, gets excited by, and feels motivated to spend more
time with”. Music can also teach discipline as much as science. Can
teach a child patience and that will be of benefit later in our life.
Listening to music is necessary to hear similarities and differences
in the sounds of the letters of words, of sounds in our
environmental, and of musical pitches. When children sing or play
music they become better readers, thinkers and learners. Various
research shows that part of the ear related to balance and
movement must be activated for learning to take place.
Music and Science developing sensory awareness. Kinesthetic sense
increases in children as children literally feel the shapes and actions
their bodies are making. Visually children respond to the images
they see as well as the images they create. Auditory sense is
stimulated as children respond to the sound of music they hear.
Tactile experiences is children engage in, when they run with bare
feet, perform specific floor movements, or swirl a scarf. Music is a
science it is exact, specific, and it demands exact acoustics.
Life would be dull indeed if all their uses no creative activities
available for us to enjoy. All work and no play doesn’t even make
sense because music is the language of our soul.
