This document discusses using data tiers to cost-effectively store data in Elastic Cloud. It introduces a hot, warm, and cold tier architecture where increasingly less relevant data is migrated to cheaper storage tiers over time. A global default policy is used to automatically configure tiers and control the data lifecycle by setting actions like forcing merges, setting reads-only, shrinking data, and deleting to reduce storage costs as data ages.
