• Based on Medicare claims from hospitals
• Adjusted for patient characteristics that may
make death or readmission more likely, such
as: age, gender, past medical history, or other
medical conditions
• 36 month collection period
• Includes data for 4791 hospitals
4. Scores
• Hospitals were scored based on how they
compared to the national average on
readmission and mortality rates for heart
attack, heart failure and pneumonia
• Hospitals were given a score from 0 to 2 (for a
total of 12 points) as follows:
– 0: below national average
– 1: same as national average
– 2: above national average
5. Hospital Ownership Categories
• For simplicity, ownership
categories were broken
down as follows:
– Government – local,
federal, state, hospital
district or authority
– Private – physician
– Non-profit – private nonprofit, church, other
– Other – proprietary, tribal
6. Hospital Types
• Hospitals were grouped
by the following types:
– Critical Access
– Acute Care
